Processing a Book Procedures


Supplies needed:

1. Books to be processed
2. Barcodes that match books to be processed
3. Spine labels that match books to be processed
4. Security Strip
5. Date Due Slips
6. Mylar Jacket and/or Contact Paper
7. Library Stamps (HHHS and Harker Heights High School Library)
8. Glue
9. Scissors
10.Mylar tape and/or tape

Processing:

1. Library Stamps
a. Stamp the 3 outer edges (top, side, bottom) with the HHHS stamp
b. Stamp the following pages with the Harker Heights High School Library
stamp.*
i. Frontispiece page
ii. Title page (author, title, publisher)
iii. Secret page (page 13)
iv. Back cover (inside)
2. Barcoding
a. Match the barcode with the book title.
b. Place the barcode in the upper right hand corner running lengthwise (up
and down) where the circulation number is facing the spine of the book.
c. Cover with the barcode protector tape.
3. Spine Label:
a. Match the spine label with the barcode (should have the same Dewey
number)

*Make sure the stamp is completely dry on Glossy Pages before closing the book or place a piece of paper on stamped
page and pick up excess ink.
b. Place 2 inches above the bottom of the spine. (should not cover volume
number, index, etc.)
c. Cover the spine label with protector tape.

4. Security:
a. Verify that the book has security first at the security gate. (alarm should
sound if it does)
b. If there is no security in place insert security strip.
i. First try to insert the slip into the spine of the book
ii. If not possible insert the slip inside the book as close to the spine as
possible. (Do not place security strip near the front, center or the
back. Place somewhere in between.)
5. Date Due Slip:
a. Check to see if the Date Due slip is on the back cover or very last page.
b. If the book does not have one glue a slip on the inside back cover.
6. Book Covers:
a. Mylar Jacket – hard cover books
i. Fit book cover to the size of Mylar.
ii. Lift the clear page and put the book cover underneath closest to the
top.
iii. Smooth the book cover and Mylar on both sides (front and back)
iv. Align the cover with Mylar by folding to the covers size. (tape with
scotch tape)
v. Fit the cover to the book and cut any excess Mylar not needed.
vi. Tape cover to the book with Mylar tape. (tape at an angle with tape in
between cover and book and folded to the inside)

b. Contact paper – paperback


i. Measure contact paper over book leaving 1 inch longer than the book
on both sides. (Extra length will be folded onto the book cover.)
ii. Place the spine of book down in the center of measured piece of
paper. Lay book down on one side.
iii. Open book leaving the back cover on the contact paper.
iv. Cut contact paper at an angle close to the each book corner.
v. Trim any excess contact paper that may be too long.
vi. Remove book and then remove contact paper on the cut side only.
vii. Place the edge of the spine down on the paper. (line it up) Lay the
rest of the book down and smooth the contact paper onto the book.
(Leave no bubbles)
viii. Fold extra contact paper onto the inside cover.
ix. Turn book over and repeat steps 1-8.
x. Be sure to cut contact paper around the spine.

Additional Processing for the Following Books:

1. Graphic Novel: GNPlace red label (GN) at the top of the book spine. Cover
with label protector tape.
2. Easy: Children’s Book Place a yellow label at the bottom of the book
spine. Cover with label protector tape.
3. Reference: Place Reference Label on the bottom of the book spine. If there
is information that cannot be covered place the label on the top of the book
spine.
4. Do Not Remove : On the frontispiece (upper left hand corner)/back page
(upper right hand corner) place the DO NOT REMOVE FROM THE LIBRARY
label.

*Reference books do not require a date due slip.
