1 The dimensions of the sheet are based on the size of the finished pocket. As the Blizzard Pocket is formed by an accordion fold,
the size of the pockets is determined by the size of the panels which make up the accordion. The depth of the pocket is equal to
the width of the panel, and the width of the pocket is half the height of the panel. The proportions of the panel determines the
degree to which the pocket may open. The ideal height-to-width ratio for the panel is 1:3 which makes a pocket with a width to
depth ratio of 2:3 with good open-ability.
2 Fold sheet in half by bringing the short edges together and creasing.
3 With the sheet folded, make a pinch at the center of each short edge by bringing the corners together.
4 Unfold sheet completely.
Fold one side of sheet into an 8-panel accordion. See accompanying instruction sheet for my preferred method.
5 Fold in long edges to meet at the center (aligned with the pinch marks). Use alignment of the accordion folds to keep the flaps
square.
Alternate Method If you further divide the short edges by bringing the corners in to meet the existing pinch marks, locating the
center-points where the long creases described above will fall, a long ruler can be used to connect these secondary pinch marks
and a bone folder can be used to score and crease the long folds.

6 Fold up the accordion portion of the sheet, positioning it at the left.

Forming the Blizzard Pocket

All activity for steps 7–11 takes place on accordion portion of sheet — diagrams do not illustrate unfolded half of sheet.
7 Begin with top single-thickness page of accordion. Fold in corners at top and bottom to form triangles that diagonally divide the
small rectangles from corner to corner. Unfold top and bottom triangles.
8 Turn page to open first spread. Reverse creases made in Step 7 and leave triangles folded in.
Continue process of folding, unfolding, and reversing triangles at top and bottom of each page (folding two thickness at a time from
this point on) until every panel of the accordion has been creased, with the exception of the final panel which connects to the
unfolded portion of the sheet. Only the triangles on the first page should remain folded in.
9 Fold up accordion.
10 Go through the accordion and inverse the folds of each triangle at the top and bottom, pushing them to the interior of the
accordion, out of sight.
11 Return to the first spread. Fold in the points at the very top and bottom of the spread along the horizontal creases made in Step 5.
Repeat until all points have been folded in.

12 At the final page of the accordion, fold the long flaps in to meet at the center, completing the construction of the Blizzard Pocket.

Forming the Cover

13 Open long flaps.
14 Flip sheet over top-to-bottom, exposing the Blizzard Pocket.
15 Reverse the fold made in Step 2 which divided the original sheet in half.

16 Flip sheet over top-to-bottom.

17 Fold sheet over (exposing the Blizzard Pocket) and make a crease which falls at the horizontal center of the final panel of the
accordion.
18 Flip sheet over side-to-side.
19 Fold in long flaps to form the pocket on the cover into which the closure flap will insert.

22

23

24

20 Close exposed crease (at vertex of angled folds), mark paper at edge of book, and fold along mark to form first spine crease.
21 Roll book to the right until it stands upright on spine and mark at edge of spine, fold along mark to form second spine crease.
22 Roll book to the right until the front cover (with tab closure pocket) is facing up and mark at edge of book, fold along mark.
23 Unroll book completely (matching diagram in Step 19) and open long flaps.
24 Close crease formed in Step 22 to the left (covering the book).
25

26

27

28

29

25 Fold sheet back and fold at a point just shy of second spine crease (spine area should be fully exposed).
26 Close long flaps and make a valley fold immediately next to folded edge to the right of spine, forming first fore-edge crease.
27 Roll book to right until book is standing upright on fore-edge. While lightly compressing the book to match fore-edge thickness to
the spine, make a mark a hair past edge of fore-edge. Fold at mark to form second fore-edge crease.
28 Lay book flat (with front cover facing up) and close crease formed in Step 27, covering the book.
29 Fold sheet back and pinch at the point halfway between revealed bottom edge of book and folded edge of flap pocket.

32

33

34

35

30 Unfold sheet, fully exposing the book, make a valley fold at the pinch mark, and unfold.
31 Unroll book completely to the left.
32 Close crease formed in Step 30. Fold sheet back and pinch at a point 1/8" shy of closest spine crease.
33 Unfold sheet and trim at pinch mark.
34 Insert end of sheet into pocket at interior of back cover.
35 Hold flap in place inside pocket and transfer both fore-edge creases to top layer of flap by folding both layers together.
36

37

38

39

40

36 Taper end of flap by creasing diagonally beginning at a point 1/4" from top along folded edge and ending at the outer fore-edge
crease. Repeat on bottom and reverse both creases.
37 Remove end of sheet from pocket and open flat.
38 Inverse diagonal creases as done in Step 10. Doing this will pull the flap closed and hide the narrow triangles inside the flap.
Reinsert the end of the sheet into the pocket.
39 Insert first page of book into same pocket.
40 Close book and insert finished flap into pocket on front cover.
