Basic History
• Wheels were developed for cargo
• Wheeled-transport created the need for
better roads (Chariots, etc)
• Road designs were established (logs,
bricks, sandstone blocks, sands)
• Use for transport of merchants, trading,
and wars

Design Standards
A highway engineer’s concern is to
design roads that would adequately
handle expected ___, and ensure that
roads are ______________ to drive on.

Standards have been developed as ____ in the design of

highways and to ensure that motorist’s __________,
_____________and _______________ are implemented in the
most _______ manner consistent with highway service
conditions. Design policies and standards generally represent
______ values.

HIGHWAY TYPES/CLASSIFICATION
Classification According to System
▪ National Roads
❑Road Right of way = ____ meter min
❑Width of travelled way 2 lane = ____ m
minimum
❑Allowable grade = ___% maximum
Public roads, declared as national roads, National roads are
classified as primary and secondary roads. The former forms the
part of the main highway trunk-line system which is continuous in
extent; the latter includes all access roads forming a secondary
trunk-line system. Contact us @fb.me/CEInstitutePH

Classification According to System
▪ Provincial Roads
❑Road Right of way = ___ meters min
❑Width of travelled way 2 lane = ____ m
minimum
❑Allowable grade = ____ maximum
These are roads connecting one municipality to another, with the
terminal to be the public plaza; plus roads extending from one
municipality or from a provincial or national road to a public wharf
or railway station

HIGHWAY TYPES/CLASSIFICATION
According to Primary Function
▪ _____
▪ These are divided arterial highways for through traffic, with full or
partial control of access and generally with grade separations at major
intersections.

▪ _____
▪ A freeway is a "controlled-access" highway — also known as an express
highway — that's designed exclusively for high-speed vehicular traffic.
Traffic flow on a freeway is unhindered because there are no traffic
signals, intersections, or at-grade crossings with other roads, railways,
or pedestrian paths.

▪ ____
▪ Parkways are arterial highways for non-commercial traffic with full or
partial control of access, usually located within Contact
