Prado Museum
A truly world-class museum, the Prado
Museum has a collection of more than
8,000 paintings and 700 sculptures.
Among its extensive assortment of
artworks are many masterpieces,
including celebrated paintings that rival
the most famous works of the Louvre
Museum in Paris.

The crystal palace

at Buen Retiro Park
Created for the Count-Duke of
Olivares in the 17th century, the
historic park has an elegant ambiance
with its lovely landscaping and tree-
lined paths. During the reign of
Isabella II in the 19th century, the
landscaping of the park was enhanced.
The Parque del Retiro was owned by
the Spanish royal family until the 19th
century; since then it has been a
public park.Built in 1887, the Palacio de
Cristal (Crystal Palace) is a splendid
cast-iron and glass pavilion that
houses art exhibitions. The Crystal
Palace looks out onto a graceful
fountain and reflecting pool..
 Royal Palace of Madrid

This grandiose palace is the Spanish

version of Versailles, a royal court designed
to impress. However unlike Versailles,
which is now just a museum, the Royal
Palace of Madrid is still the official
residence of a monarch (the King of Spain)
and continues to be used for official State
events.
 The Real Madrid Stadium

Not all of Madrid's tourist attractions revolve around

art. One of its most-visited museums draws football
(soccer) fans to the stadium of the city's home team,
Real Madrid.
Visitors can take a tour of the stadium, as well as the
museum with displays of trophies, team artifacts, and
temporary exhibits. Tours also give fans a chance to
enjoy the view of the field from the top of the
stadium.

GET TO KNOW BARCELONA
Barcelona is the capital and largest city
of Catalonia and Spain's second largest
city, with a population of over one and
half million people (over five million in
the whole province). This city, located
directly on the northeastern
Mediterranean coast of Spain, has a rich
history, having been under Roman, then
Frank law before declaring its
independence.
In 1992, Barcelona gained international
recognition by hosting the Olympic
games which brought a massive upturn
in its tourism industry. This had the
effect of changing the city in ways that
are still felt today with neighbourhoods
renovated (and in some cases leveled)
and the intense.

August is probably the busiest time in
Barcelona; at the same time about 10%
of shops and restaurants can be found
closed from mid-August to early
September, when the owners go on
vacations. Catalan is understood by
95% of residents.

to visit in Barcelona the

 La Sagrada de la Famiglia

One of Europe's most unconventional churches, this

spectacular basilica is the most famous sight in Barcelona. The
UNESCO-listed Basilica de la Sagrada Familia stands in the
northern part of the city, dominating its surroundings with its
18 spindly towers soaring high above all other monuments.
The Basilica of the Sacred Family is also known in Spanish by
its official name: Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família.
Antoni Gaudí was commissioned in 1883 to design this basilica as a
neo-Gothic church. But instead of following the plans, he created a
signature example of his famous surrealistic Art Nouveau
architecture. He had no firm ideas in mind, preferring to alter and
add to the plans as work progressed. Although Gaudí had originally
forecast between ten and fifteen years, the church was never
completed. As a result, the main work by the most important Catalan
architect of modern times remains just a shell, and nobody knows
whether or when it will ever be completed.
 The Gothic Quarter

For 2,000 years, the Gothic

Quarter has been the spiritual and
secular center of the city. Relics of
ancient Roman buildings are still
found here, but the Middle Ages
are best represented by the
historic monuments packed into
this quarter. A masterpiece of
Gothic architecture, the medieval
cathedral stands on Monte Tabor,
the highest point in the town
center. The Gothic Quarter is
where Christopher Columbus was
received by the Catholic Monarchs
after his first voyage to the New
World, and since the 14th and 15th
centuries, the city administrations
have had their seat here.
 Camp Nou

Just as Modernista buildings are must-see

attractions for architecture fans, Camp Nou is
a must-see for football (soccer) fans. Home of
the FC Barcelona, the 99,354-seat stadium is
the largest in Europe and second largest in the
world. Attend a game here or take the lively
tour and visit the museum. Camp Nou was one
of the venues for the 1992 Summer Olympics
in Barcelona.
