The Future State of U.S Family

2

In the current times, the family in the US has undergone a significant evolution. In many

regions, the extended family has almost vanished and the typical family of a married couple with

children has become considerably less common as divorce rates, separate couples, single

parenthood, and gender variation in marriages have all risen. The impacts of these changes in the

family have been remarkable. We expect more changes in the state of the U.S family over the

next 50 years. However, some aspects of the family will remain the same.

The issue of marriage popularity in the U.S has transformed drastically in recent decades.

Half of the people living in the U.S above the age of eighteen were married in 2017. There has

been a significant drop in the rate of marriages since then (Geiger & Livingston, 2020). The

driving factor that has contributed to the drop in marriages is reduced income. In the future

where technology through artificial intelligence will replace human labor, the rate of income will

further decline and hence a reduction in marriage.

The rate of divorce cases in the future U.S is likely to decline. Education has improved

the mindset of young people where they make better choices in marriage. Voluntary marriages

will be more common where people will make revised decisions. Therefore, the chances of

divorces will be less from Americans getting married in their late 20s.

The current trend of optional childbearing in the U.S and around the globe have is a

driving factor in the number of children in a family. The entry of women into the workforce will

result in a delayed or forgone child-reality. Family demographics will change where many

families will opt for one to two children.

Gender equality will transform the future American family from traditional practices.

Technology will bring about flexible working allowing both genders to combine their work and

family duties (Berrington & Vitali, 2016). Adapting to this revolution will depend on how fast

men will embrace gender equality in the family.
