Assignment 2
Question 1.1

Concrete: Ages 7 – 11 years old. Learners learn through

doing and using real objects such as dots, tallies. The
activity I will plan will encourage learners to identify and
compare differences and similarities between two
variables on one graph.

Semi concrete: Learners are able to use pictures to

represent numbers. The activity I have planned will allow
learners to understand and interpret numbers through
pictures.
Semi abstract: Learners in this phase are able to use
pictures to represent concrete objects such as dots and
tallies.

Abstract: Learners are able to understand and use

written symbols as numbers.
Question 2.1:

Problem solving is where one participates in finding

answers or solutions to a difficult question or issue.
Naudé and Meier (2020:31)

The importance of problem solving show many

advantages:
✓ Learners are able to make sense of mathematical
ideas, especially in the four basic operations in
mathematics (+ - x ÷).
✓ Learners will believe in their ability to think
mathematically.
✓ Problem solving increases confidence in
mathematics.
✓ Learners are able to work at their own pace when
solving a problem.
Word problem examples:
1. A shopkeeper has 12 boxes of 3 pencils each. How
many pencils do all the boxes have in all?
2. Maya has 15 ice creams, she shares them equally
with John and Sam. How many will each of them
get?
3. There is 7 fish in a pond 3 died. How many fish is left
in the pond?
4. Sara has 2 puppies her mom buys her 8 new bunnies.
How many animals does Sara have now?
Question 2.1:
Importance of integration:
✓ Learners are able to create and make real world
connections.
✓ Learners are actively engaged.
✓ Increased retention and recollection.
✓ Understand importance of skills and their value in
real life.
Four examples:

1. Integration Space and shape with relationships

2. Integration Space and shape with patterns

3. Integration Space and shape with measurement

4. Integration Space and shape with data handling

Question 2.2:
Problem based activity on space and shape:
Stating the problem to be solved:
✓ According to the rules, decide which colour to use on
each shape.
✓ Create your own shape challenge.
Step 1: organise data
✓ Identify which colours to use.
✓ Choose the correct shape.
✓ Spot the differences in the shapes.
✓ Identify similar shapes.
Step 2: Representing data (Illustrations)
✓ Rough drawings and planning.
✓ Spot the differences in the shapes.
✓ Identify similar shapes.
✓ Choose the correct shape.

Step 3: Analysing data

✓ Analyse the rules
✓ Spot the differences in the shapes.
✓ Identify similar shapes.
✓ Choose the correct shape.
Step 4: Interpreting data (Ask relevant questions)
✓ Is this a triangle?
✓ Is this colour correct?
✓ What colour should the squares be?
✓ Are these two shapes the same?
Step 5: Reporting data
✓ Double check your work
✓ Make sure all rules were followed
✓ Do you think you did your best

Question 3.1a:
Step 1: Learners must understand the specific feature
that has to be measured. When measuring time learners
would have to have the correct materials for telling the
time, such as a watch, clock, phone, pocket watch, etc.
Step 2: Learners must understand the units that will be
used. Learners will have to understand the difference
between minutes, hours and seconds.
Step 3: Learners must know which measurements
strategy to use to determine the measurement. Learners
will have to know which clock hand determines the
hours and which hand determines the minutes.
Step 4: Learners use number measurement to develop
and solve their own real life problems. Once leaners
understand the concept of time, they will be able to
understand the measurements to develop and solve their
own real life problems.

Question 3.1b:
✓ Use various clocks of different time zones.
✓ Use analogue clock
✓ Use a digital clock
✓ Sundial
✓ Use your fingers to calculate remaining sunlight
✓ Tell the time by tracking the sun’s position
✓ Look to the stars
✓ Use your body clock to tell the time

Question 3.2:
A word problem related to the activity:

There are 3 tubes of paint. The blue one is 5 inches

long. The red one is 3 inches long and the yellow one
is 7 inches long. Compared to the blue one, how
much longer is the yellow one?

Based on the word problem you have identified,

state the specific features that needs to be
measured:

*Measure the tubes of paint.

*Identify the different colours
*Compare the different lengths of the tubes.
*Calculate the difference

List the units of measurements that can be used to

solve the problem. Indicate whether these are
standard/non-standard units of measurement?:

*Inches
*Centimetres
*Millimeters
*Meters
List appropriate mathematical vocabulary to solve
the problem:

*Measure
*Length

Design an assessment tool to assess learners using

the problem you identified. This tool will include a
checklist with important criteria that will be
observed:

Criteria Total Learners

1 Type of 1
measurement
used
2 Workings and 3

3 Accurately 1
