What is NGO sustainability?
Sustainability is defined as an organization’s ability to:

 Improve institutional capacity to continue its activities among target populations over an
extended period of time;

 Maximize impact by providing quality services and products;

 Minimize financial vulnerability; and

 Develop diversified sources of institutional and financial support.

In other words, sustainability consists of an NGO’s ability define a relevant mission, follow
sound management practices and to develop diversified sources of income that assure
continuity of quality activities and services and coverage of target populations.

Why is sustainability important?

Around the world, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) make an invaluable
contribution to the delivery of high-quality affordable reproductive health and family
planning products and services. NGOs take the lead in developing information, education and
communication programs that encourage healthy behavior and are often a driving force
behind service delivery as well. Additionally, many NGOs have the organizational flexibility
to make changes to meet the health needs of a community. As donor funding diminishes, and
as public health programs begin to contract services to NGOs, the need for financial
independence, sound management and quality control is more important than ever. NGOs
must be able to operate efficiently over time and they must function in an autonomous
manner. A successful and sustainable NGO has a flexible and responsive organizational
structure, an independent board of directors, and a motivated, qualified and properly paid
staff.

preparation of Detailed Project Report(DPR) for the comprehensive development of Koira
lake in Devanahally Taluk, Bengaluru Rural District” vide work order no.001/2020.

The Project- Koira Lake Rejuvenating

The ROTARY RMV has initiated a vision of rejuvenating Koira Lake. The proposal
envisages re-greening and protection of the lake, drains etc. The present DPR is being
prepared for the sole purpose of rejuvenating the lake. The interpretation of existing trends
and scenarios in the process of conservation of lakes was based on interactions with limited
key players namely government stakeholders, developers involved in similar projects and
personnel involved in the field work. The lake restoration will be both preventive and
ameliorative depending upon the status of the lake in future.

During the last two years, the villagers have volunteered and desilted about fifteen thousand
Cum of silt, which has increased the storage of the lake and resulting in storing water even
during the month of March 2020.

However, the other areas of the lake and the feeder channels have to be desilted toincrease
the storing capacity and inlet flow respectively.

The lake system of Koira lake mainly covers the area in the upstream side of the lake. The
lake is situated in a valley within the Koira area Limits. The entire catchments area is about
2.26 Sq.Km. The lake receives water from the run offs of the surrounding area, which
includes agriculture fields, plantations, barren lands, quarry area and a minor portion of the
built-up area.
Objective of the project
The ROTARY RMV, is committed to achieve the goal of transforming this lake into a vibrant
water asset with sparkling clean water, increased water intake & holding capacity,
development & enhancement of public amenities to make it more usable & attractive to the
habitants. With the background this study has been conducted to analyse the various
conservation and rejuvenation scenarios.

Course of Action
By considering the existing conditions of the lake the club and the consultants have proposed
the following road map at different phases:

PHASE-I

using modern & scientific technology.

 Improve the overall aquatic & surrounding environment by carrying out environment
management plan in its true spirit.

PHASE-II

 Afforestation

 Protection of tank bund and ring bund by stone revetment.
