1. Answer All questions 2 x10

a. What is viscosity? State its unit.
b. Define laminar and turbulent flow.
c. What is equation of continuity?
d. What do you mean by cavitation of a pump?

i. What is fluidization?
j. Why differential manometer is used?
2. Answer Any Six Questions 6x5
a. Describe different types of fluid.
06
b. A simple U-tube manometer is installed across an orifice meter. The
manometric fluid is mercury (SG -13.6) and flowing fluid through piping is
carbon tetrachloride (SG- 1.6). The manometer reads 200mm. What is the
pressure difference over a manometer in N/m2?

c. Describe about air binding and priming of the pump.

d. Derive the Bernoulli equation for incompressible fluid without fluid friction.
e. Water is flowing through a pipe of 5cm diameter under a pressure of
29.43N/cm2 (gauge) and mean velocity of 2m/s. find the total head of water at
57

a cross-section, which is 5m above the datum line.

f. What are the advantages of venturimeter? Describe in brief.
g Differentiate between Centrifugal pump and Reciprocating pump.
3 Sugar syrup is flowing through a pipe of 55 mm internal diameter at a rate of 10
00

66.67cm3/s. The viscosity of the syrup is 0.15 N.s/m2 and its density is
1040kg/m3. Calculate the frictional loss over a length of 10m.
4 Describe in detail the construction and working of the centrifugal pump with 10
diagram.
5 Derive the flow equation for a venturimeter. 10

6 Water flows at the rate of 0.147m /s through a 150mm diameter orifice 10
inserted in a 300mm diameter pipe. If pressure gauge fitted at the upstream
and the downstream of the orifice plate give reading of 176.58kN/m2 and
88.29kN/m2 respectively, find the coefficient of discharge of the orifice meter.
Density of water = 1000kg/m3.
