 CONTINUOUS SLAB
The slab which is continuous over several supports is
called continuous slab
The bending moment and shear force at any section in
continuous slab /beam depends on load nature and
position of loads in the same span and on the loads in
other spans

Clause 22.5 of IS 456 gives simplified coefficients to

determine maximum bending moment and shear force in
beam and slabs which is continuous over at least three
spans.

To apply above clause ,no span should differ by more than

15% of longer span

Consider a continuous slab which is supported by masonry
wall at ends and by beam at intermediate supports
𝑀1 , 𝑀3 , 𝑀5 are negative bending moments at supports (top
of slab will be under tension)
𝑀2 , 𝑀4 are positive bending moment at mid span (bottom
of slab will be under tension)
