1. Condé Nast Traveler magazine conducts an annual survey among its subscribers to
determine the best accommodations in the world. A sample of nine European hotels
is presented (Condé Nast Traveler, January 2000). Prices for a standard double room
range from $(lowest price) to $$$$(highest price). The overall rating corresponds to
the evaluation of the quality of the services of each hotel; the higher the overall rating,
the higher the level of satisfaction.

2. The Ritz Carlton Hotel uses a customer opinion questionnaire to obtain data on the
quality of its restaurant and entertainment services (The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Naples,
Florida, (February 2006). Customers were asked to rate six items: welcome, service,
food, menu, service, and atmosphere. The data recorded for each factor was 1 Poor, 2
Regular, 3 Good and 4 Excellent. Client responses provide data for six variables. Are
these variables qualitative or quantitative?

3. The Hawaii Visitors Bureau collects data on visitors. Among the 16 questions asked
to passengers of an arriving flight in June 2003 were the following.

* How many times did you visit Hawaii?


* The main reason for this trip is: (10 categories to choose from including a vacation,
a honeymoon, a convention).
* Where am I going to stay: (11 categories including hotel, apartment, relatives,
camping)
* Total days in Hawaii

a) What’s the population?


b) For each question indicate which are qualitative or quantitative

4. When 1002 potential voters were interviewed, 70 % of them said they had voted in
a recent presidential election (based on ICR Research Group data). However, voting
records indicate that only 61 % of the potential voters actually voted. Which differs
from these two values.

5. Write 5 examples of qualitative variables (nominal and ordinal) and 5 examples of


quantitative variables (discrete and continuous)
