On Pigeon lsland where the student population of 5 000 ranges between the ages of 4 and 18, there
was concern about the outbreak of measles among children. Seven years ago, the government had
announced that children must be fully immunized to be enrolled in school. The Ministry of Health
conducted a survey among 500 students, all of whom had contracted measles, to ascertain the age group
that was most affected.

The research found that 85 per cent of those who contracted the disease were in the lG-I4 age group;
| 0 per cent were l5 years and over and 5 per cent were between 0 and 4 years. No child in ttre age group

5-9 contracted the disease. The study also found that children who were immunized against measlei,
mumps and rubella (MMR) before they were one year old, free of cost at government antenatal clinics
never had booster shotsr.
