 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Human coronaviruses (HCoV) which cause gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections

were first introduced by the discovery of HCoV‐229E and HCoV‐OC43, from the nasal cavities

of human patients with the common cold, in the 1960s. Other discovered human coronaviruses,

which have caused serious respiratory tract infections, include SARS‐CoV (in 2003), HCoV NL63

(in 2004), HKU1 (in 2005), MERS‐CoV (in 2012), and the latest one SARS‐CoV‐2 (in 2019)

resulting in coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) where this virus is not new on humanity because it

was experienced since the beginning, according to the study of Alizadeh et. al. of 2020. The study

also added that this virus become first an outbreak or epidemic, often refers to a sudden increase

in the occurrence of infectious disease in a particular time and place, then later on declared as a

pandemic, that is near‐global epidemic outbreaks, where multiple countries across the world are

involved.

Furthermore, Data and Statistics are presented as this virus arises, using the different

information and statistics in forming a view of the extent of the reach of the virus among the public,

which includes the confirmed cases, recovered cases and death cases cause by the coronavirus

infection.
 On the other hand, infection cases of the province of Quirino, Philippines rises in the last

days of March and the month of April this year 2021, reaching up to above 400 covid-19 active

cases, where it is the highest reported active case in the province, since the pandemic has started.

Making the province protocols and health guidelines to be stricter, from modified general

community quarantine to modified enhanced community quarantine. One of the affected localities,

is the municipality of Cabarroguis, specifically the community or barangay of Gundaway.

The aim of this research is to measure the pandemic’s outbreak behavior in Gundaway,

Cabarroguis, Quirino through the official reported data and statistics of the community in the

month of March and April 2021 and to assess the effectiveness of the guidelines and policies

implemented by the local government unit of Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino.

B. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

C. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study will be conducted to analyze the data and statistics of covid-19 cases of

Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino in the month of March and April, year 2021. Specifically,

to measure the pandemic’s outbreak behavior and the effectiveness of the guidelines or

policies, then from there, to propose actions or plans for recommendations. Furthermore,

it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the total number of covid-19 infection in Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino?

a) Confirmed cases

b) Recovered cases

c) Death cases

2. What are the reported conditions of the total confirmed cases of Gundaway, Cabarroguis,

Quirino?

a) Asymptomatic

b) Mild

c) Moderate

d) Severe

e) Critical

3. What is the status of the pandemic in Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino in terms of:

a) Case Fatality Rate (CFR)

b) Infection Fatality Ratio (IFR)

c) Case Attack Rate (CAR)

 4. What are the corresponding policies and protocols implemented by the Local Government

Unit of Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino in controlling the pandemic?

5. Are the corresponding policies and protocols implemented by the Local Government Unit

of Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino effective in controlling the pandemic?

D. HYPOTHESIS FORMULATION:

As the pandemic unfolds, we are faced with the task to understand and apply data and concepts.

It is not only important to comprehend what the number of cases, infections and deaths truly

represent, but also to be aware of its implications involved in gathering and analyzing these

numbers.

• A great tool to measure the severity of the disease and how fast the virus spreads and

enters in the community.

• Useful in assessing the effectiveness of public policies and to set future strategies to

fight the pandemic in the community.

E. SCOPE & DELIMITATION:

Scope:

This study is only intended on understanding & analyzing the pandemic data and statistics

of Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino. The collection of data will be at the official page of

Philippine Information Agency (PIA) of Quirino in the month of March and April 2021.
 Delimitation:

The study will limit its scope to the pandemic data and statistics of Gundaway,

Cabarroguis, Quirino and is delimited on the neighboring barangays.

F. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will benefit the following:

• The researcher – to enhance its skills in conducting qualitative and quantitative

research, and gain knowledge on the process of conducting a case study.

• The community – to become aware and conscious of the pandemic’s outbreak

behavior in the community.

• The local government unit – for them to know the efficiency of the implemented

protocols and guidelines and to set future strategies in controlling the pandemic.

• The future researcher ¬ This study can be used for further research in this field and

borrow findings from the study to get more precise results.

G. DEFINITION OF TERMS

• Case Fatality Rate (CFR): measures the proportion of deaths over the confirmed number

of cases during a specified period, and is an indication of the severity of a disease among

the population.
• Case Attack Rate (CAR): The case attack rate is calculated as the number of people who

became ill divided by the number of people at risk for the illness and is an indication of

how fast covid-19 spreads or enters in the community in the said period of time.

• Data and Statistics: numerical figures of the covid-19 cases that are officially reported

by the PIA Quirino in Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino

• Gundaway, Cabarroguis, Quirino: Gundaway, formerly Poblacion, is a barangay in the

municipality of Cabarroguis, in the province of Quirino. Its population as determined by

the 2015 Census was 4,188. This represented 13.69% of the total population of

Cabarroguis.

• Infection Fatality Ratio (IFR): it measures the proportion of all deaths from a specific

disease over the total number of infected individuals. and is an indication of the severity

of a disease among the infected ones. Thus, IFR is much lower than CFR.

• Pandemic: near‐global epidemic outbreaks, where multiple countries across the world

are involved.

• Philippine Information Agency (PIA): The Philippine Information Agency is the

official public information arm of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines. It

is an attached unit of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO)
