Answer any two questions

Q1. a) Explain what kind of intermolecular forces are expected in the following substances. 5.0
i) CH4 ii) CH3CH2CH2CH2OH

b) Fill in the gaps: 5.0

When we add a solute to a solvent, the boiling point………., the freezing point………..,the
vapour pressure………….., and osmotic pressure is created. Assuming creating of an ideal
solution, these changes are dependent upon the ………… of the solute, not the ……. of the
solute. This is all due to …………………

c) What two opposing forces are responsible for capillary action? How does a viscosity of a liquid 5.0
change with temperature?

Q2. a) What does it mean when equilibrium is described as dynamic? Write down the equation relating 4.0
Kc with Kp.

b) State the Le Chatelier’s Principle. Consider the reaction 2SO2(g) + O2(g) → 2SO3(g); 2+4
∆H° = -198.2 kJ/mol. Predict the direction of the shift in equilibrium according to Le Châtelier’s =6.0
principle if we were to (i) increase the temperature; (ii) increase the pressure; (iii) increase SO2;
(iv) add a catalyst.

c) Explain how hemoglobin transports oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body that use 5.0
oxygen is an example of dynamic equilibrium.

Q3. a) Define rate, rate constant and order of a reaction 4.5

b) Deduce the integrated rate equation for a first order reaction and show that half-life is 6.0
independent of the initial concentration of the reactant.

c) Calculate the time needed to complete 60% of a first order reaction given that rate constant is 4.5
0.06 s-1.
