KABUKI OF JAPAN
Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theater art that combines acting, singing and dancing
which is performed in a stylized manner. The term kabuki in modern Japanese means: ka,
“song”, bu, “dance” and ki, “skill.”
In Japan, Kabuki is
considered as high form of
play that actors show their
wide range of skills in vocal
and visual performance. For
almost four centuries, the rich
blend of music, mime, dance,
costume, and props have

been in existence in Japan.
Kabuki was founded in 1603 by Okuni, a Shinto priestess. She assembled around
her a troupe of wandering female performers who danced and acted. Okuni’s Kabuki was
the first dramatic entertainment of any importance that was designed for the tastes of the
common people in Japan. Okuni and her troupe of mostly women began performing a new
style of dance drama in dry riverbeds of the Komagawa River in Kyoto. Her troupe gained
national recognition on their plays, and later on evolved into kabuki.
Kabuki programs ran from morning to evening because of this, there was a constant
coming and going in the theater and many spectators often attended for only a single play
or scene. Dances and movements are usually acoompanied by shamisen. The most popular
shamisen music is called Naugata which is flexible; it can be performed by one or entire
shamisen orchestra with twenty musicians.
As time goes by, Kabuki became one of the three major classical theaters of Japan.

WAYANG KULIT OF INDONESIA
In Indonesia, shadow puppets are called
Wayang Kulit. The term ”Wayang” in local
Bahasa means “shadow” and refers to the entire
gamut of shadow plays in Indonesia. On the
other hand, the term “Kulit” means “leather”. The
puppets are called Wayang Kulit because the
puppet figures are usually made of leather.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfydro4X2t0&t=135s

Wayang Kulit in Indonesia is a well-known shadow puppet play. It is one of the oldest
continuous traditions of storytelling in Central Java. The art of Wayang Kulit is popular not only
in Bali but across the whole of Indonesia. Puppet plays are often used to convey stories of
God, impart morality lessons, or educate common man about good and evil. In Wayang Kulit
performance, the puppet figures are rear-projected on a taut linen screen with the coconut oil (or
electric) light.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT INDONESIAN SHADOW PUPPETS

• Wayang puppets are two dimensional (2D). They are made of leather or even paper
nowadays. The piece of leather is perforated and elaborately painted to represent various
characters.

• Shadow puppets in Indonesia usually have two bamboo sticks attached to them so that
they can be moved easily. A puppeteer controls their performance behind a screen of
white cotton or unbleached muslin.

• There is a light source behind the screen that cast the shadows. Puppets can be moved
closer to or farther from the light to create various effects and poses.

• The chief puppeteer is called “Dalang” and he manipulates the sticks and breathe light
into the puppets behind the screen. He is also the narrator and uses various voices to
convey different dialogues.

• The Dalang commands great respect in society and is expected to know and recite a
number of moral stories and historical anecdotes.

• Wayang shows in Indonesia are often accompanied by songs and music played on
Gamelan drums.

In Wayang Kulit, the Dalang sings the mood songs (suluk) at regular intervals while
performing. Suluk are never accompanied by the full gamelan ensemble. Often, a single
instrument accompanies the singer, never more than three or four. To accompany actions is the
major dramatic function of gamelan music. Performers execute fight scenes during entrances,
