Question-1. What is the func of clamp knob in AN/PVS-5A?

Answer. Clamp knob locks binocular position in viewer mount assembly or offset viewer
mount assembly. Allows adjustment of the binocular assembly until the eyepieces are
located at a comfortable distance from your eyes with proper tilt.

Question-2. What is the diff between narrow beam and flood beam?

Answer. A spotlight casts a narrow beam of light, usually no wider than 45 degrees.

This beam is more concentrated and easier to point and control. A floodlight can have
a beam spread of up to 120 degrees. It can illuminate a larger amount of space with the
same wattage and lumen output as a spotlight.

Question-3. What is demist shield from which material it is being made of?

Answer. Demist shield is used on the eyepiece lens to prevent fogging. It is made up of
Polymer, Clear Polycarbonate, and Rubber.

Question-4. Which NVDs have inverting IITs what are the other methods used for
inverting image?

Answer. To invert image an inverting IIT is used in NS-685C, collimator is used in

AN/PVS 7D and NVB GP-4A and fiber optic inverter in used in AN/PVS 5A.

Question-5. What is high light cut off and auto-gating?

Answer. There is a high light cut-off feature in AN/PVS 7D that cuts off power to the
goggles when they are exposed to high levels of light for 70 ±30 seconds. Individual
bright lights (headlights, flashlights, or other concentrated light sources) will not actuate
the high light detector located on the front of the goggles. To turn the goggles back on,
turn the power switch to RESET/OFF position and then to ON again.

The Auto-Gating process applies an adaptive approach in order to reduce the impact of
impulsive noise. Auto-Gating electronically reduces the duty cycle of the photocathode
voltage by rapidly switching the voltage on and off, which maintains the most

appropriate performance of the image intensifier tube also brighter lights do not cause
any damage to the unit.
Question-6. Why green color is used in NVDs?
Answer. Along with human eye’s sensitivity to green color and ability to distinguish
more shades of green than any other color there is one more reason w.r.t design that
why green color is used in NVDs. When photons hit the lens at the front of night vision
goggles, they are still carrying the light of all colors. But when they are turned into
electrons, they lose that information, and incoming color light is turned into black and
white. When decoding an image from black and white spectrum, the flow of electrons is
no longer as intense, so if we use green color then the device spends less energy to
render the image, which leads to an increase in the operating time of your device. And
saving energy is sometimes a priority, given the conditions in which the device is usually
used and the tasks performed with its help.
