MODULE IN ENGLISH GRADE 7

FIRST QUARTER

WEEK 3

FOREWORD

This module was designed in response to the “new normal” school year, resilience must be built into our
educational systems to ensure that knowledge and skills remain a priority for all students. This module contains the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC), an innovative response to the present situation of our educational system. With
the distance education or learning, the school hoped for a continuous learning for the students who may not be
physically present at school. This is also to ensure the safety and health of the students.

Lesson 2: Oral vs Written Language

Here are the tasks you must accomplish for this module:

 Identify the examples of oral and written language

It might be easy to say that oral is for speaking and written is in tangible form, whether seen or
read. However, language goes far deeper beyond those definitions. On our first topic in
literature, we discussed that literary forms during Precolonial Era are spoken and passed
down from one person to another using the oral tradition. Why is that so?

Oral and Written Language


When we us the word “language,” we are referring to the words we choose to use in our speeches
thus we are mainly indicating on the “spoken/oral” language. When we were a child, we learn how to speak
prior having the knowledge to write. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that written language isn’t
important. Both have the equal use and purpose and differences.

After knowing the definition of oral and written language, let’s see what are the characteristics that make
them different from each other.

We already discussed that Precolonial Literature is primarily composed of oral tradition and that
literature such as folk speeches survived by being transferred verbally from one person to another.
