Filipinos are known to have many positive cultural traits, at the same time, some parts of our cultural values
can be observed as toxic. One of these negative traits is the Compadre system which considered as the
biggest roadblock in building the nation’s growth and development.

Point –
Being a part of the Filipino culture, the Compadre system has been in play since time immemorial. It is the
value system where one gains favor, promotion, or political appointment through family affiliation (nepotism)
or friendship (cronyism), as opposed to one's merit. This system permits and reinforces the prevalence and
continuance of corrupt practices that blocks our country’s improvement.
Reason –
Compadre system is a habit that’s been part of our culture. It has been a pervasive system observed in both
private and public organizations. The dominant practice of this system is highly associated with the incessant
corruption in the country.
Explanation –
In the Philippines, Compadre system is considered as one of the sources of many controversies and
corruption. It has been an open secret that one cannot join the political and government sector in the
Philippines without mastery of the Compadre System. It shows us how progress has been concentrated in
the hands of a few privileged cohorts at the expense of the members of the community. Even though
compadre system is unfair, there are situations that compadre system will prevail because family and friends
ties are important because of our Filipino culture.
Point –
Compadre system reflects us with the truth that those who had been fortunate to have connections of the
ruling leadership are the ones who were often rewarded with power and wealth while completely ignoring the
performance merit system. As a result, it retards competitiveness by rewarding the undeserving which
demoralizes the bureaucracy and kills initiative to excel in our society. This is the reason why Compadre
system is considered to be one of the major deterrent in our country’s sustainable development.
