Over period of time, various advancements have taken piace in the field of track
maintenance. Manual packing of track has altogether been replaced with machine packing. Life
of rails has improved with use of rail grinding to remove surface flaws and increasing the contact
area. Therefore, with the improvement of technology of track, review of norms of track
maintenance and renewal criteria has been done to suit to the changing conditions of increased
axle load, increased speed of trains and constraints of manpower etc, after discussion in 10th
Extra Ordinary meeting of Track Standards Committee held on 220 June, 2021
Revised norms of track maintenance and criteria of track renewal duly approved by
Board (MI) is given below:

Service life of| 14 years/400 GMT or on 1) Service life of galvanized

The above revision in norms of maintenance and renewal criteria shall come into force
with immediate effect. Zonal Railways are advised to plan track maintenance and renewal based
on above.
