Name of work: Final Location Survey for Proposed Doubling between Dharmavaram –
Pakala – Katpadi Stations (290 Km. Approx.)

***
REPORT ACCOMPANYING THE DETAILED ESTIMATE
1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Dharmavaram to Pakala Section: The proposed section from Dharmavaram to

Pakala (228 km) lies in Guntakal division of South Central Railway. This complete
section lies entirely in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Both Dharmavaram and Pakala
are junction stations. This existing section is a non-electrified single line section.

1.2 The Railway Board sanctioned Preliminary Engg – cum – traffic survey vide Blue
Book item no. 31 of 2013-14 for doubling between Dharmavaram – Pakala stations
(227.7 km.). Preliminary Engineering Survey for double line between Katpadi and
Tirupati stations (104 km.) was sanctioned by Railway Board in the budget for the
year 2012-13 vide Pink Book Item no. 20 with an anticipated cost of Rs.188.95
lakhs.

1.3 The proposed doubling work of Dharmavaram – Pakala – Katpadi stations (290 km)
has a sanctioned cost of 2900 Cr. as mentioned at Sr. no. 42# in Pink book of
South Central Railway of FY 2020-21. This work is an umbrella work under
PB#57/2019-20/NR.

1.4 The double line is proposed to take off from road no. 6 at Dharmavaram station at
ch: 271.0m towards Pakala end and joining at Dharmavaram end of existing Pakala
station.

1.5 The Final Location Survey for the proposed doubling work of Dharmavaram-Pakala-
Katpadi stations (290 KMs) has been taken up by South Central Railway as follow-
up action on the Abstract Estimates & Preliminary Engineering & Traffic Survey
(PETS) Report, which has been sent to Railway Board for perusal. While on the
context, it would be relevant to mention that the corridor features two distinct
sections viz. Dharmavaram-Pakala (228 Kms) and Pakala-Katpadi (62 Kms).
Although both the sections are contiguous; they differ significantly in terms of traffic
demand; apparently due to huge passenger traffic for Tirupati station, which is
located on a branch line taking off from Pakala.
1.6 The Dharmavaram-Pakala-Katpadi corridor (290 Kms) lies primarily in the state of
Andhra Pradesh with a small section in the state of Tamil Nadu. The PETS Report
envisaged that Dharmavaram-Pakala-Katpadi corridor doubling will add an
additional train running capacity of 15 Passenger and 3 Goods Trains Each Way;
aggregating to an overall enhancement of running capacity by 36 trains Both Ways.
Incidentally, the allocation of trains indicates that primary underlying emphasis has
been on enhancing the passenger traffic capacity in the corridor.

Practice and references mentioned below:

a) Indian Railway Standard Schedule of dimensions 2004 with latest correction slips
issued up to 29
