Divisibility Rules
By looking at the digits of a large
number or by doing simple
calculations, you can easily tell
whether a number is a factor of
the given number.
Remember that a number is divisible by:

2 – if the ones digit of the

number is 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8
Example: 108 is divisible by 2 because 108
ends in 8.
Remember that a number is divisible by:

5 – if the ones digit of the

number is either 0 or 5
Example: 430 is divisible by 5 because
430 ends in 0.
Remember that a number is divisible by:

10 – if the ones digit is zero

Example: 750 is divisible by 10 because 750 ends
in 0.
PRACTICE
The given number is divisible by which

25
among the following.

2 5 10

2 5 10
The given number is divisible by which

30
among the following.

2 5 10

2 5 10
The given number is divisible by which

78
among the following.

2 5 10
The given number is divisible by which

78
among the following.

2 5 10
Remember that a number is divisible by:

3 – if the sum of the digits

of the number is divisible
by 3
Example: 138
1 + 3 + 8 = 12
12 is divisible by 3.
801
801
8+0+1=9
9 is divisible by 3
428
428
428
4 + 2 + 8 = 14
14 is not divisible by 3
Remember that a number is divisible by:

6 – if the number is
divisible by 2 and 3
Example: 48
it is divisible by 2 and 3. It ends in 8
and the sum of the digit or 4 + 8 is
12, 12 is divisible by 3.
98
98
98
It ends in 8, so it is divisible by 2.
9 + 8 = 17, 17 is not divisible by 3.
117
117
117
It ends in 7, so it is not divisible by 2.
1 + 1 + 7= 9, 9 is divisible by 3.
534
534
534
It ends in 4, so it is divisible by 2.
5 + 3 + 4 = 12, 12 is divisible by 3.
Remember that a number is divisible by:

9 – if the sum of the

digits of the number is
divisible by 9
Example: 24 156 is divisible
by 9 because the sum of the
digits or 2 + 4 + 1 + 5 + 6 = 18
and 18 is divisible by 9.

1 767
1 767
1 + 7 + 6 + 7 = 21
21 is not divisible by 9.

39 645
3 + 9 + 6 + 4 + 5 = 27
27 is divisible by 9.
