One of the most featured article of the year 2020’s news section
related to Science, Technology and Society is the Kaliwa Dam project
proposed by the government that aims to ease the strain on the Angat-
Ipo-La-Mesa water system and ensure water supply during the occurrence
of El Niño. The construction is set to happen at Kaliwa low dam in Tanay,
Rizal. Although opposed by many citizens and environmentalist groups,
the NEDA board continued to approve the 9 year project under Aquino
administration as part of it’s drought prevention efforts. The reasons may
look appealing to general public as it is masked with words that sounds
securing and safe, the underlying flaws associated with building Kaliwa
Dam is enough to overturn the decision to continue constructing it.
I personally think that the objective of building the Dam isn’t really
trajected to the common people’s welfare but for the benefit of the
managing sector and businesses involved in building it. The significance
of building the 12. 2 Billion Dam isn’t enough to make up for what it
actually costs. If the construction that is estimated to finish in 2024
proceeds, 11,000 indigenous natives will be displaced, will endanger
endemic wildlife, and forever damage the environment that might cause
bigger environmental tragedy. The call for the opposition of it’s
construction is on-going and I encourage everyone to join and make a
change. The collective force of the citizens can do anything, especially
stopping inhumane and greedy decisions like this.
