Methodology

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted in Miagao, Iloilo covering twelve barangays. barangays are
located in the Poblacion, namely Baybay Norte, Baybay Sur, Mat-y, Tacas, Bolho, Ubos Ilawod
and Ubos Ilaya, It also included four coastal barangays near the poblacion, Mambatad, Bacauan
Palaca and Igtuba and Guibongan.
Miagao is a first class municipality in the province of Iloilo with a total population of
64,545 people according to the 2010 Census. It is known as the "Onion Capital of the Visayas”
and located 40 kilometres away from Iloilo City.

Figure 1 shows the map of Miagao, Iloilo. Miagao has 119 barangays, 12 of them were
interviewed for this study. The participating barangays have a total population of 11,633 people.
The population breakdown are as follows, 631 from Bacauan, 2,786 from Baybay Norte, 1,183
from Babay Sur, 385 from Bolho, 1,137 from Igtuba, Mambatad with 1,001, Mat-y with 1,893,
Palaca with 1,879 and Tacas with 738. Miagao has a total land area of 156.80 km2.

Research design

A qualitative descriptive interview is used in this study to identify the benefits of the
Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino program members as a beneficiary of National Health Insurance
program of PhilHealth. An interview schedule was used in collecting information from 225
respondents in April to May 2015. This study employed descriptive statistics such as frequency
distribution to analyze the data.

Method of Collecting Data

To gather the data needed, the researchers asked for a list of 4Ps members from the
certain barangay, and seek help from the parent leader of the 4Ps members. The researchers will
conduct a Face-to-face interview with the help of an Interview Schedule provided written in
English and in local dialect (Hiligaynon).

Selection of Respondents

Households from Miagao were chosen as respondents for this study. Randomly selected
from the list of 4ps members in Miagao, people from the Barangays Bacauan, Mambatad, Palaca,
Igtuba, BaybayNorte, Baybay Sur, Mat-y, Tacas, Bolho, UbosIlawod, and UbosIlaya were
chosen to be interviewed. A total of 225 people taken from 11 barangays of Miagao were
interviewed for this study.
Data Requirements

In order to conduct the study, the researchers used primary data gathered from a face to
face interview of the PantawidPamilyang Pilipino Program or 4Ps beneficiary households of
Miag-ao, Iloilo. These primary data were from the interview using an interview schedule and
direct observation.

Secondary data such as books, profiles, journals and articles from libraries, government
agencies, and on the internet were used to identify the appropriate concepts that were employed
in this study. The secondary data served as a supplement and a support for the results obtained
from the interview.

Data Collection Instrument

The researchers constructed and used an Interview schedule as a data collection


instrument. It was written in English and was translated in Hiligaynon. The interview schedule
was divided into five parts. The first part is the basic profile of the respondent which includes
sex, religion and numbers of years in school. The second part is the knowledge of the respondent
of his/her membership in the National Health Insurance Program as beneficiaries of the
PantawidPamilyang Pilipino Program. The third part is the respondent’s availment of the Phil
Health by asking about their knowledge on the benefits and usage of the PhilHealth while the
fourth part is the housing of the respondent. Lastly, part five is the household roster of the
respondent.

Data Analysis

In order to analyze the data gathered the construction of frequency tables were done to be
able to discuss and interpret the data. The frequency tables were based on the collected data from
the Interview Schedule which were divided into five parts, which includes the socio-
demographic profile and housing of the participant, the participant’s knowledge on NHIP and the
benefits they had derived from the PhilHealth as well as the household roster.

For this study, indicators for the knowledge on NHIP include; membership in the
PantawidPamilyang Pilipino Program, knowledge of the respondents of the benefits of Phil
Health, and information on the usage of the Philhealth. Knowledge on the NHIP can also be
affected by the socio-economic status of the respondent. To assess the socio-economic status of
the participant, indicators such as educational attainment, number of members in the household,
number of children and housing.
