Sporting heroes

What makes someone a sporting hero? Millions of spectators watched Usain Bolt running in
the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He broke the world record in three athletics events. At the
same Olympic Games, the American swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals and
broke seven world records. The world media went crazy! Everyone loves a champion.

But at the Olympics there is also another kind of hero. Have you ever seen the film Cool
Runnings? It’s a funny film about a bobsleigh team from Jamaica. It’s based on the true story
of a Jamaican team who competed in the Winter Olympics in 1988. They lived in a country
with no snow, they had nowhere to train and no money from the government or big
businesses to help them, but they made it to the Olympics and they raced for their country.
The Olympic Games have many stories like this.

When Eric Moussambani, from Equatorial Guinea in central Africa, swam in the 100 m
freestyle in Sydney in the 2000 Olympic Games, the international media reported it around
the world. He didn’t win a gold medal. He didn’t break any records. In fact, his time at one
minute and fifty-two seconds was more than twice the time of Pieter van den Hoogenband,
who broke the world record with a time of 47.84 seconds. Before the Olympics,
Moussambani trained in a twenty-metre hotel pool. He only started swimming eight months
before the Olympic Games. The race was his first time in an Olympic-sized fifty-metre
swimming pool. And the crowd clapped and cheered for Moussambani until he reached the
finish line.

These people are not champions and they do not go back to their countries with a handful of
medals, but they are heroes because they try.

Dear Annabel,

Last weekend, my family organized my birthday party in Vung Tau. The event was
participated by my parents, my grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and my siblings. In fact,
this is a large family and almost all the members were there who had managed time.
Everyone presenting at the event brought different attractive gifts for me and delivered the
gifts on the evening of my birthday celebration. I met them after many years and the
moments were really enjoyable. Some of the relatives had become surprised seeing me. They
actually expected me to be younger than I was. But with the passage of time, I was a grown-
up lady of 25 years. Later, I found that I had not met them for many years and this created
the gap among us.

The day was very special for me. My younger sibling told me that everyone has gathered at
the resort to celebrate my birthday and also forbid me to share the information with anyone
else. As a result, I was waiting eagerly for the evening. When it was evening, my dad asked
me to be at the resort lounge. Everyone was gathering there. I followed him and was really
glad to have everyone there. Everyone wished me and I cut the cake. My mom took part in
preparing the cake with the resort cook. Besides, there were some other sea food. We all
enjoyed the foods and the birthday cake.

It was a different celebration in various terms. Firstly, I usually celebrate the birthday with
my family at home and with my friends when I am the college. But this time, I had to take an
official leave from my college to attend the family get together. Interestingly, this was the
time when I have seen many of the relatives for the first time in my life. They also were glad
to meet me. It was a family reunion after many years. Everyone enjoyed themselves and also
prayed for me from their heart. I was amazed at the family bonding too. Really, it was a nice
day. I received so many gifts and When my mom gave me her necklace, I cried in happiness.
This was the present I love best and I will never forget this time.

Next year, if you can come and visit me, I hope you meet my big family. They are really
lovely and friendly.

It’s very near because it took us about 2 hours to drive there. This year, I really wanted to
have a memorable party, so I hold it on the beach. It was on the twenty-fifth of January, and
I had started to plan it two weeks before. I started booking a birthday party for 10 people in
Sirena Restaurant. The party was decorated with pink and purple - my favorite color. I then
proceeded to order snacks and appetizers along with the beverages for the evening. The
celebrations finally commenced and all the guests had arrived fully at 7.00 pm. My friends
welcomed me with the birthday song and hugs from everyone.
We all had an amazing time at the party. Everybody socialized, we played party games,
danced and had a lot of fun throughout the evening. The best part was the fact that everyone
was happy with the celebration and there were smiles all around me. I got gifts from
everyone and was all smiles when my sister gifted me a necklace.

In a corner there was a DJ and we danced all night! During the dance, I took some breaks to
eat cake and to drink some beverages! I really enjoyed myself!!

birthday at a restaurant near the ocean in a rather simple way. So, a small cake was provided
to us by the restaurant owner, but with the cake, he also brought something else which: he
brought a big sea fish – a huge grilled fish which I had never seen before up and until then –
to fill our stomach. Needless to say, it was the best birthday celebration I have ever had.

Anyway, this birthday was different, mainly because I celebrated it near an ocean where I
could enjoy the beautiful nature around it. In fact, the experience of making videos at the sea
beach while listening to the sound of the gentle breeze, whistling past my ears, was
something I will never forget.

This was the greatest celebration of the birthday of my life so far and I thanked my parents
for the attractive arrangements. In fact, I have never thought that my parents would care for
me so much and take the other members too at a luxury resort on the island of Bali in
Indonesia. We started three days before my birth date and it was a kind of surprise for me
when I found some other relatives were also present at the resort and booked our
accommodation.
