The IMPACT OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ON

EMPLOYEES’ PERFORMANCE
Employees are assets of an organization. Their constant growth and learning are essential for enhanced
performance of the company. The employees make sure that the goals and targets are met with optimal
efficiency.

Training and development emerged in united states after its involvement in the world war 2. During this
period, there was significant increase in the demand for trained workers due to expanding wartime
economy and technological changes. Ever since, training and development of the employees has been
adapted by the organizations all around the globe since some scholars believed human resource
development added to productivity of the employees. But whether training and development adds to
increased performance or not remains a question of debate.

At first, training was considered as an extra effort to gain expertise in relevant subject, but now it is
considered necessary if one is to adapt to changing work circumstances. Each organization, operating
around the globe, has its own set of procedures under which it operates. Its employees must be aware
of the organizational structure and its working environment to add some value to the organization.
Therefore, each organization must follow a set of trainings to make the new entrants aware of the
organization’s working environment. We live in a world that is changing so rapidly. We need people that
can learn and un-learn things. Due to increased technology, organization’s working environment keeps
on changing. Machinery keeps on changing. Therefore, it is immensely important to train and develop
employees accordingly.

These trainings aim at providing employees with advanced and up-to-date knowledge and to avoid skill
obsolesce. It ensures the employees remain competent in their profession. Companies allocate a portion
of their budget to train employees as it breeds positive outcomes in terms of productivity and cost
efficiency. Over the years, people have a developed a relation between training of employees and their
performance. The more the employees are trained, the more they get better at their professions.

Researchers have emphasized through their research that training and development sharpens their skill
sets and they are able to use their skills in an efficient way to achieve the desired goals. Human resource
serves as the cornerstone of the organization success. Considering the current rapid advancement in
technology and changing workplace dynamics and customer’s needs, it becomes a necessity for the
company to train their employees to keep them updated in knowledge and practical expertise. Studies
have shown that putting in more funds in trainings has increased performances of employees.

The main purpose of the training is to facilitate employees and improve their skills. With its help, the
employees deliver a satisfactory performance. As discussed earlier, the dynamics are changing due to
globalization, therefore it is obligatory for the employees to know the current knowledge and expertise
and how to accommodate customers with changing situations. Trainings make employees feel they are a
part of something bigger and they’re in it together. The training can give new skills to employees
necessary for future workplace environment.

Improved performance can mean less employee turnover, low maintenance cost and less complaints
from customers. If the employees are performing up to the mark, they require less supervision and bring
innovation at the workplace. It creates a positive workplace culture attribute for the company and with
its help the organization can compete with its rivals.
