Question question I have written down and using our thinking ● Swapping in different
caps to figure out an answer. Now you might already meanings for “important” and
have some ideas to the question, but I bet after we “nutritious”
do some research you will have some even better Instructional Strategies
ideas! Ok my 2nd graders, the question is on the ● Issue based inquiry
document screen right here, “Why is it important to Instructional Materials
eat a nutritious breakfast every day?” Please write ● Pencil
this question down on your paper. ● Paper
Students: Write the question down on their paper.
Teacher: Ok before we dive into the question, let’s
look at the words in it. First, I see the word important.
Important is that something means a lot. So, above
the word ‘important’, would you please write “means
a lot.”
Students write “means a lot” over the word
“important”
Teacher: Great! Now, let’s look at the word
‘nutritious.’ Nutritious means healthy, which also
means that it is good for you, so above the word
‘nutritious, can you please write “healthy.”
Students write “healthy” over “nutritious”
Teacher: Great. So now our question with these
words we substituted to help us understand what it
means is, “Why does it mean a lot to eat a healthy
breakfast every day?”

Make Hypotheses Teacher: Now students, I am going to have you Differentiation/Grouping

Gather Data Teacher: To help us make our answer extra strong, I Technology Integration
have some handouts for you to look at and read with ● Students use tablets to visit
your partner. I also want you to visit MyPlate website

Please partner up again and review the handouts
and website, take notes, and think about how this
information can help us answer our big question!
Students: Partner up and read handouts/website with
one another.

Assess Hypotheses Teachers: Ok 2nd graders let’s all bring it back to the Instructional Strategy
(by analyzing data) whole class. I loved hearing the conversations going ● Classroom group discussion

some great thoughts and ideas and I can’t wait to their peer’s ideas/opinions

answer the question. Expected answers: Eating
sugar for breakfast makes you crash, eating a
nutritious breakfast makes you have energy the
whole day, eating healthy will make you grow bigger
and stronger.

Generalize about Teacher: Now, I want you to come up with 4 Instructional Strategy
Findings sentences in your journal telling me about the ● Journal writing
benefits of eating a nutritious breakfast. I want the
first sentence to be stating your opinion on the Instructional Materials
importance of eating a nutritious breakfast, and then ● Journal
3 sentences to be reasons why everyone should eat ● Pencil
a nutritious breakfast. The last sentence will need to ● Notes
be your concluding sentence to wrap everything up.
Remember, you can use your notes to help you
come up with the 3 reasons why and also the
reasons that some of your peers just shared out.
Expected outcome: “Do you eat a healthy breakfast
every day? It is important to eat a healthy breakfast
every day because healthy food is good for you.
Also, eating healthy food every day helps you grow
big and strong. Last, eating a healthy breakfast will
help give you energy for the whole day. I think
everyone should eat a nutritious breakfast to stay
healthy.”

Analyze the Process Teacher: Okay scholars, let’s think back to what we Instructional Strategy
learned just now! I’m going to ask you some more ● Classroom group discussion
questions to think about. What did we start this ● Issue based inquiry
inquiry process with?
Student: You started by asking us a question.
Teacher: Yes! What question did I ask you?
Student: You asked us why is it important to eat a
nutritious breakfast every day?
Teacher: Exactly! Then what did we do next?
Student: We came up with answers.
Teacher: Right! This was called using our
background knowledge. So I asked you what you
knew already before giving you any more
information. Then what did we do?
Student: We looked at handouts and the MyPlate
website and did research.
Teacher: Yes you did! You all did research to find
answers to the question I asked. Did you do anything
next?
Students: We took notes and then came up with 5
sentences on why it is important to have a nutritious
breakfast.
Teacher: Did anyone change their answer after they
did research? That happens sometimes!
