PART – B (5 x 13 = 65 marks)

11. a) It is required to select a flat belt drive for a compressor running at 720 r.p.m, which is (13)
driven by a 25 kW, 1440 r.p.m motor. Space is available for a centre distance of 3 m.
The belt is open-type.
(Or)
b) A truck equipped with a 9.5 kW engine uses a roller chain as the final drive to the rear (13)
axle. The driving sprocket runs at 900 r.p.m and the driven sprocket runs at 400 r.p.m
with a centre distance of approximately 600 mm. Select the roller chain.

12. a) The motor shaft rotating at 1440 r.p.m has to transmit 15 kW to a low-speed shaft rotating (13)
at 500 r.p.m the teeth are 20o involute with 20 teeth on the pinion and the gear made of
CI with a maximum safe stress of 56 MPa. A safe stress of 35 MPa may be taken as the
shaft on which the gear is mounted. Design the spur gear to suit above conditions the
starting torque may be assumed as 1.25 times the running torque.
(Or)
b) A pair of helical gears subjected to moderate shock loading is to transmit 30 kW at 1500 (13)
r.p.m of the pinion. The speed reduction ratio is 4 and the helix angle is 20⁰. The service
is continuous and the teeth are 20⁰ FD in the normal plane. For gear life of 10,000 hours.
Select and design the gear drive.

13. a) Design a pair of bevel gear for two shafts whose axis are at right angles. The power (13)
transmitted is 25 kW. The speed of the pinion is 300 r.p.m and of the gear is 120 r.p.m.
(Or)
b) Design a worm gear drive a transmit 22.5 kW at a worm speed of 1440 r.p.m. Velocity (13)
ratio is 24:1. An efficiency of atleast 85% is desired. The temperature rise should be
restricted to 40°C. Determine the required cooling area.

14. a) A nine speed gear box, used as a headstock gearbox of a turret lathe the speed range is (13)
180 r.p.m to 1800 r.p.m using a standard step ratio. Draw the speed diagram and
kinematic arrangement.
(Or)
b) Design a 12 speed gear box for a lathe. The minimum and maximum speed are 100 r.p.m (13)
and 1200 r.p.m. Power is 5 kW from 1440 r.p.m induction motor. Select the number of
teeth for all gears.

15. a) A single dry plate clutch is to be designed to transmit 7.5 kW at 900 r.p.m. Find: (13)
1. Diameter of the shaft,
2. Mean radius and face width of the friction lining assuming the ratio of the mean radius
to the face width as 4,
3. Outer and inner radii of the clutch plate, and
4. Dimensions of the spring, assuming that the number of springs are 6 and spring index
= 6. The allowable shear stress for the spring wire may be taken as 420 MPa.
(Or)
b) An automotive type internal expanding double-shoe brake is shown in Figure 1. The face (13)
width of the friction lining is 40 mm and the maximum intensity of normal pressure is
limited to 1 N/mm2. The coefficient of friction is 0.32. The angle θ1 can be assumed to
be zero. Calculate: (i) the actuating force P; and (ii) the torque-absorbing capacity of the
brake.

PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)

16. a) A pulley of 0.9 m diameter revolving at 200 r.p.m. is to transmit 7.5 kW. Find the width (15)
of a leather belt if the maximum tension is not to exceed 145 N in 10 mm width. The
tension in the tight side is twice that in the slack side. Determine the diameter of the
shaft and the dimensions of the various parts of the pulley, assuming it to have six arms.
Maximum shear stress is not to exceed 63 MPa.
(Or)
b) Design a cam for operating the exhaust valve of an oil engine. It is required to give (15)
equal uniform acceleration and retardation during opening and closing of the valve each
of which corresponds to 60° of cam rotation. The lift of the valve is 37.5 mm and the
least radius of the cam is 40 mm. The follower is provided with a roller of radius 20
mm and its line of stroke passes through the axis of the cam.
