Cycle Test II

Branch: Mechanical Sem: IV

Subject: Thermal Engineering Subject code: ME 6404

Total Marks: 50

OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, the students can able to apply the different gas
power cycles and use of them in IC and R&AC applications.
Part-A
(92=18)
1 What is diagram or blading efficiency? (CO1)
2 Define the term stage efficiency incase of reaction turbine. (CO1)
3 What are the effects of super saturation in a nozzle? (CO1)
4 Differentiate impulse turbine and reaction turbine. (CO1)
5 What is compounding in turbines? Why is compounding necessary? (CO1)
6 Compare rotary and reciprocating compressors. (CO1)
7 Why intercooling in necessary in multi stage compression? (CO1)
8 What is the effect of clearance volume in an air compressor? (CO1)
9 State the principle of working of screw compressors. (CO1)
Part-B
(216=32)

10. (a) (i) In a steam nozzle, the steam expands from 4 bar to 1 bar. The initial velocity of 60 m/s
and the initial temperature is 200 C. determine the exit velocity if the nozzle efficiency is 92%
(10) (CO1)
(ii) Explain the principle of velocity compounding of steam turbine using a suitable sketch (6)
(CO1)
(OR)
(b) A single row impulse turbine develops 132.4 KW at a blade speed of 175 m/s using 2 kg of
steam per second. Steam leaves the nozzle at 400 m/s. velocity coefficient of the blade is 0.9.
Steam leaves the turbine blades axially. Determine the nozzle angle and blade angles at entry and
exit. Assuming no shock. (CO1)
11. (a) A single stage, single acting reciprocating air compressor ha s a bore and stroke of 200
mm and 300 mm respectively. The compressor sucks air at 1 bar and 20C at 5.5 bar. If the
compression follows the law PV1.3=C and clearance volume is 5 percent of the stroke volume,
determine,
(i) The mean effective pressure
(ii) the power required to drive the compressor, if it runs at 500 rpm.
(OR)

(b) (i) Explain the role of intercooler and after inter cooler in air compressor. (6)
(ii) Compare the performance characteristics of a vane, centrifugal and axial flow compressors.
(10) (CO1)
