Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Instructions to students:
Preamble
This course deals with principles of AC and special Machines. Students are taught working,
design and performance of AC machines which include synchronous and induction machines
operating on single phase and three phases. Students are also introduced special types of electrical
machines.
Part - A
A 3-phase, star connected, 5 kVA, 400 V, 50Hz 4-pole alternator has the following test data
at rated speed. The armature resistance per phase for a given alternator is 0.15 Ω/phase in
Machines lab –II.

A1.2 Determine the Short Circuit Ratio (SCR), unsaturated synchronous reactance and
adjusted synchronous reactance per phase in Ωs
A1.3 Compute synchronous impedance in Ωs and draw the graph between synchronous
impedance (Zs) and excitation current (If) for A1.2.
A1.4 Compute percentage voltage regulation at rated load, X p.f. lead and lag by
synchronous Impedance Method (EMF) under unsaturated condition.
A1.5 Compute percentage voltage regulation at rated load, X p.f. lead and lag by
synchronous Impedance Method (EMF) under saturated condition.
A1.6 Draw equivalent phasor diagrams for considered lag, lead and unity power factors.
A smooth cylindrical synchronous machine and a salient pole synchronous machine with
damper winding are operating on an infinite bus. Discuss the consequences if the field
suddenly gets open circuited for both the machines.
