Assignment I
Term - 1
Instructions to students:
1. The assignment consists of 5 questions.
2. Maximum marks is 50
3. The assignment has to be neatly word processed as per the prescribed format.
4. The printed assignment must be submitted to the subject leader.
5. Submission Date:
6. Submission after the due date will not be accepted.
7. The maximum number of pages should be restricted to 20.
8. IMPORTANT: It is essential that all the sources used in preparation of the assignment must
be suitably referenced in the text.
9. Marks will be awarded only to the sections and sub-sections clearly indicated as per the
problem statement.
Preamble
Voltage regulation is a prime factor in selecting the alternator for generating power.
Conventionally the voltage regulation of alternator can be measured in four different ways.
All the methods are indirect methods i.e one can evaluate the performance of the machine
at required load condition without actually loading it. Out of the four the ZPF and ASA
methods will give more accurate results.

Part -A (10 marks)

Develop a debate on the topic “ZPF method is better than ASA method for finding voltage
regulation”

The debate should address the following parameters

A1.1 Consider the test data and calculate voltage regulation by ZPF method

A1.2 For the Same machine in A1.1 calculate voltage regulation by ASA method

A1.3 Compare both results and take a stance

Part B (40 marks)

B1. The salient pole synchronous machine has two reactance direct axis (X d) as well as
quadrature axis(Xq) synchronous reactance. Suppose OCC and SCC characteristics are
obtained for the salient pole machine and the synchronous reactance calculated
from the OC and SC characteristics does it results in Xd or Xq. Justify

Your report should address

B1.1 Procedure for conducting OC and SC test

B1.2 Justify the answer mathematically

B2. Three coils wound axially (side by side) on a cylindrical rod with notation a,b and c
which are excited by three phase balanced currents. For this arrangement

B2.1 Draw a neat diagram and represent the balanced currents with phasor diagram

B2.2 Compute the resultant m.m.f mathematically and comment on your

observation

B3. Discuss the importance of air gap in synchronous machines and the impact of air
gap length on the following (use necessary graphs and equations in support of your
analysis)

B3.1 Power factor

B3.2 Short Circuit Ratio

B3.3 Synchronous reactance

B4. A three phase 400V, 40kVA, 50Hz, star connected synchronous motor has a
synchronous reactance of 4 ohm. Its friction and windage loss are 1.8kW and core
losses are 1.2 kW. The shaft load is 12kW initially and the power factor of the motor
is 0.8 leading

B4.1 Calculate the line current, armature current and excitation emf

B4.2 Calculate the values of armature current and motor power factor when shaft
load is increased to X kW. (Excitation is kept constant)

B4.3 Synchronising power/electrical degree

( For ‘X’ data contact course leader)
