1.0 INTRODUCTION

Transport can be defined as a movement of passenger and goods from point of origin to
the point of consumption. It can involve in moving either passenger or goods. Without transport
it is believed that everything will stand to steel and nothing will move. If this happens, our
country economics will be strongly affected as there will be no business activities, no
employment, and no income distribution among the population.

In most developed countries, transportation has been treated as social responsibilities

by the govrment. Therefore profit is not their main agenda. When this scenario happen, the
provission of transport service is purely concentrated on the movement of people and goods
from all level of society without leaving anyone behind in the planning stage.

However, in the urban area, there are some problem with transport. This assigment will
discuss about the urban transport issues and the ways to overcome the issues. In the urban
area, we have to face many problem related to transport. This is due to high demand of
transport in that area. For example, people use transport to go to work everyday, to transport
freight in business and many more.

Due to this issues, we have to find the ways to overcome this problem. Every problem
will have the ways to solve it, so in this assigment, I will suggest a few ways to overcome this
transport issues.

2.0 Transport in urban area.

The major role of public transportation in large cities seems to be to strengthen the central
business district and to maintain its prominence in the urban area. Public transportation's role in
small urban areas is somewhat different. Whether public transportation systems in small or
medium-sized urban areas could be designed to effectively compete with the private automobile is
questionable. The objectives of a public transportation system will vary depending on the size of
the area and geographical location. The assumption that as population grows, the demand for the
product will grow, is false. Most public transportation systems are product oriented. A system
should be concerned that its process remains a consumer-satisfying process. Examples are
quoted to illustrate the fact that reduction in unit price does not greatly increase the demand for its
product. The few innovations that have been implemented in public transportation, have been
oriented toward specific technology or equipment. However, technology that yields new
equipment and lower operating costs does not necessarily ensure an increase in demand for the
service. The factor of primary importance is service. The observation is made that if the
automobile is permitted to continue free competition with public transportation, the latter will
continue to lose.

3.0 Transport issues in urban area

There are some issues of transport in the urban area. This is because usually the population in
the urban area is too pack. In that case, transport system will face some issues such as traffic jam,
polution and more.

3.1 Parking problem

Parking issues in urban area is very critical, this is due to several reason. One of the reason is
too much people bring their car to go to the work. As the result, its will cause dumping of car in the
city and the parking lot cannot accommodate that much of car. in addition, the lack of parking
spaces in urban areas is also acause of this problem. most urban areas have only a few parking
spaces because most available space is filled with buildings and offices.

Besides, another causes is, many people can afford to buy their own vehicles and some of
them have two or three vehicles compared to people in rural area. Normally, people in rural area will
share the vehicles. In one house normally they will have only one car but in urban area one house will
have 2 or 3 car and some times more than that. When all people bring their own vehicles to go to
work, the city will full with the vehicles but the parking space is very limited.

Next, the shopping complex with is build in the center of the city will make the situation
become more complicated. people who want to go to the shopping complex will park at the same
place with people who want to go to work.

3.2 TRAFFIC JAM

When everyone in the city have their own vehicles, not only will cause lack of parking space,
but also will cause traffic jam. Traffic jam issues is very familiar to the people in the urban area.
Everyday they have to face traffic jam during go to work and also when going back home. Traffic jam
is a routine for people who stay in urban area. Traffic jam is very bad because it can make us stress
and sometime it also may cause road accident. Normally, the motorcycle rider will involve in the
accident during traffic jam because they will try to move as fast as they can until they forgot about
their safety.

One of the cause why traffic jam happen in the urban area is, people don’t want to share the
vehicles and bring their own car everywhere. This will cause dumping of the vehicles in the city
especially during

Next, another reason for this issues is the habit of the driver. Due to the lack of parking space,
many driver take an irresponsible action with park their car everywhere. This action will cause the
situation will become seriously bad. The road will become narrower because the driver park their
vehicles on the roadsides. When the road become narrower, the traffic stream will be affected.
Another driver who use that road will face the difficulty to move.

Apart from that, the bad condition of road also will affect the traffic stream. The driver cannot
drive smoothly and this will cause traffic jam. Besides, the construction work also make this issues
become more complicated. The road construction work also make the road become narrower and
will disturbing the traffic stream. This situation will become more serious when the contractor do their
work slow.

3.5 PUBLIC TRANSPORT ISSUES

In the urban area, issues about public transport is very familiar. Public transport that provided
by the government or private sector is not enough to fulfill the demand of public transport in urban
area. Everyday we can see people has to wait for long time before that public transport arrive and
sometimes they have to wait for two or three trips before they can enter the vehicles because public
transport is too pack with passenger especially during peak hours

The causes for this problem is because of the weak public transport system. The weakness of
the system can cause a big problem. People will have a dificulty if this problem continuously happen.

For example, the management did not provide enough vehicles during peak hours. When the vehicles
is not enough, then the passenger has to use that with uncomfortable because too many people will
use that transport. This condition also not safe for the public transport user because many incident
can happen when the vehicles carry overloaded passenger. The vehicles will on risk to accident and
women will easily exposed to sexual problem.

Besides, the accident that involve public transport also is the problem why people did not want
to use public transport. The causes of this accident is the driver not drive safely and the vehicles use
is not in good condition. For example, in kuala lumpur, the condition of buses use is very bad such as
metrobus and bas Selangor.

4.0SOLUTION FOR THE ISSUES

All the issues regarding the transport in the urban area has to solve quickly. There are some
suggestion how to overcome the issues.

4.1 PARKING PROBLEM

4.1.1 increasing parking space in the urban area

We can increasing the parking lot in the urban area. For example, we can demolish unused
building and build a parking lot building. By build a building for parking lot, we can increase the
parking space compared if we only provide a empty land for parking space.

4.1.2 Encourage people to use public transport

When more people use a public transport, private vehicles will be less and when this situation
happen, parking problem will not be an issue anymore.

4.1.3 encourage car pooling

Car pooling means we share our vehicles with other person. This method also can reduce the
number of private vehicles and directly can reduce the usage of parking space.

4.2 Solution for traffic jam issues

4.2.1 Reduce construction work during daytime

Construction work on the road is one of the causes why traffic jam happen. So, to reduce
traffic jam, we must reduce the construction work during daytime especially during peak hours. The
construction work should be done during night because less vehicles will use the road during that
tme.

4.2.2 Car pooling

Besides can reduce parking problem, this method also can reduce the traffic jam problem.
When people share the vehicles, the vehicles on road will be decrease and the road will be clear.

4.2.3 Towing and compound the vehicles that park at wrong place

The main causes of traffic jam is the vehicles park at the road side and disturbing the traffic
flow. So, the government should take an action to towing that vehicles and compound the owner.
When no vehicles park at roadside and disturb the traffic, then the traffic flow will not have a problem.

4.4 Solution for Pollution issue

4.4.1 use the right motive power

Normally, the main causes of pollution from the transport is the motive power used, release the
gases that can pollute our environment. If we use the motive power such as diesel hybrid and hybrid
car, e can reduce the release of carbon monoxide that can cause pollution.

4.5 Solution for public transport issue

4.5.1 Increasing the quantity of public transport

The management of public transport should add the quantity of public transport vehicles.

When the public transport vehicles increase, the problem such as waiting for long time and vehicles
pack with passenger will not happen.

4.5.2 increasing the frequency of public transport

The frequency of the journey for public transport should be increase. When the trips frequency
increase, then the problem regarding public transport will reduce. The ways to increase the frequency
of the journey is by using all the vehicles optimumly and add the vehicles.

4.5.3 Provide comfortable facilities at the terminal

To encourage people to use public transport, government should provide comfortable facilities
at the terminal. The terminal such as bus, train and taxi terminal should be provided with the facilities
such as enough seat, toilet and comfortable space for passenger wait the vehicles.

4.5.4 Service the vehicles regularly

The vehicles use should be service regularly in order to reduce the number of accident among
public transport. The passenger will feel safe when the vehicles is in good condition.

4.5.5 monitor the public transport driver

The company management should monitor their driver. The management should make sure
the driver drive safely and do not drive more then the speed limit. One of the ways is by using the
technology. We can put a speed recorder and cctv to know the drivers habit.
