Antonio de Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas is an account of the history of the

Spanish colony in the Philippines during the 16th century. Morga's work is based on personal
experiences, or on documentation from eye-witnesses of the events described. His purpose on
writing the Sucesos de las islas Filipinas was so he could chronicle "the deeds achieved by our
Spaniards I the discovery, conquest, and conversion of the Filipinas Islands. And Pigafetta’s
work is important as a source of information about the voyage itself, and also includes an early
Western description of the people and languages of the Philippines. Of the approximately 240
men who set out with Magellan, Pigafetta was one of only 18 who returned to Spain. Magellan
himself was killed, on April 27, 1521, in a battle on Mactan Island, the Philippines, which
Pigafetta witnessed and recounts in his work. Both works describes the Philippines from the time
that they were here.

aaaaa The books written by Antonio Pigafetta and Antonio Morga describes the events
happened during the times that they occupied the Philippines. They described what foods can be
found here, like the coconut tree and others. Even the bagoong that Morga described as
disgusting. The Filipinos back then worship each day ‘the first thing they see in the morning
when they go out of their houses’ like primitive or natural religion, as what Pigafetta said in his
observation. They ate their rice as if it were bread, and cook it after the following manner, said
Pigafetta. Morga, too, describes the native inhabitants of the islands, their physical appearance,
homes, clothing, food, customs, weapons, boats, religion, burial practices, languages, and
writing. He discusses the terrain and soil of the islands, the fruit and timber trees native to the
area, and the animals, birds, fish, minerals and shells found there. He also includes brief
descriptions of the various islands, with notes on navigating their rivers, coastlines, and straits.

Both books described the Philippines in their point of views, but Antonio Pigafetta’s First
Voyage around the world was more like a journal because he is describing everything he
observed from the Filipino people. His book gives too much unnecessary information and is not
in order as he is detailing everything that happened in a day. It mainly focuses on his and the
captain’s activities. Meanwhile, Antonio Morga’s Sucesos de las islas Filipinas is like an
encyclopedia that has no irrelevant information and gives detailed information about a topic and
focuses on the important information that a reader should know.

The dog ran very fast the dog ran very fast the dog ran very fast

The book of Antonio Morga gives detailed information on a topic and you can easily
understand his version of the Philippine island but Antonio Pigafetti’s version is what I would go
for if I were to choose between the two. The book of Morga is good to read too but it just directs
you to the point and it could be somewhat boring to read. While Pigafetta’s book could be
interesting as it shows the journey and observation on their travels. The unnecessary information
in Pigafetta’s book like the description of how the Filipinos back then used to worship every day
or how they cook rice. It isn’t somewhat boring to read because you can see it from his point of
view like you were actually there and not just reading it casually. Although they describe the
Philippines in the same manner, there are still some details that Pigafetta’s book covered unlike
in Morga’s.

Therefore, I must say that I will pick Pigafetta’s book rather than Morga’s as I am a
person who enjoys reading like I was actually there. The events that happened in the past
describe how the Filipinos were back then and it is a vital component for us to know our history
even if it was in the point of view of a conquistador. Filipinos were welcoming towards the
foreigners and showed hospitality towards them based on what I’ve read on the book. They even
showed their cultures and traditions to the foreigners. And by reading these books, you can get
an idea on how the Filipinos lived during those times. It’s amazing how the Filipino people
welcomed someone who’s not their own and did not declared war on them the first time they
arrived in here.
