SMART GRID
 The is in general is distributed into two
layers, transmission and distribution

 The transmission layer is used to transport

energy over long distances with low losses
and to connect big power plants to the grid.

 The distribution layer supplies small units

with energy or connects medium and small
generators to the energy system

 For an optimal grid operation the

transmission system is highly automated,
mainly to facilitate control of voltage and
load-flows, using transformers with in-
phase regulation, regulation in quadrature
and reactive power compensation units. In
addition using FACTS (for Flexible AC-
Transmission Systems).

SMART GRID
 What makes smart grid really smart is communication! Communication in smart grid is divided
into three dimensions:
1. Electrical energy conversion chain
2. Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM), In general the zones are used to aggregate and
thereby reduce information
3. Interoperability Layers

MICRO GRID
 Micro grid is defined as an interconnected loads and distributed energy resources that are
defined within boundary and are controllable as one entity
 Micro grid can be connected or disconnected from the grid (mostly in the LV or MV) where it
can function as both grid tied or off grid system.
 Microgrid, depending on its size, can contain one or multiple distributed resources!

WHAT IS A HYBRID SYSTEM?
 Hybrid system refers to when more than one energy system are combined in a closed controlled
boundaries, making them function as a micro grid!
 One of the most common hybrid systems combinations is when PV system used with diesel
genset! Electrical storage can be used to improve the performance greatly!
 Hybrid control system provides
synchronization between solar • Solar, Wind, Hydro, Biomass, Wave,
Renewable Tidal, Geothermal
panels and diesel gensets, as well
as providing remote monitoring • Diesel Generator, Natural Gas
Non-Renewable Generator, Grid Connection, etc.
and control.
 Batteries can be used to improve • Battery, Fuel Cell, Hydrogen Tank,
the utilization of solar energy Storage Capacitor, Flywheel, Pumped Hydro, etc.
with respect to the genset
generated energy as well ac as a
spinning reserve.
 The $ saving comes mainly from
reducing the consumption of fuel
(in this case diesel).
