APPLICATION
An electric bell is a mechanical bell that functions by means of an electromagnet. When an electric current is
applied, it produces a repetitive buzzing or clanging sound. Electric bells have been widely used at railroad
crossings, in telephones, fire alarms, etc.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
Clapper
When the switch is closed, the electric current from the cell flows through the
electromagnet, producing a magnetic field. The clapper that made by metal attract toward
the electromagnet. Thus, it strikes the bell which produce a sound. When the clapper attract
to the electromagnet, it no longer touches the metal connector and hence the circuit is
broken and the electromagnet turns off. The clapper returns to its initial position then its
contact with metal connector and the circuit is being complete where the electric current
flows again. This causes the electric current pass back through the electromagnet and attract
clapper toward the bell again. The process repeats itself as long the switch is off.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Advantages
Low cost.
Less use of electricity.
Can perform for more than 100000
operations.
Warning in danger .
Detect human or machine errors.
Assured safety.
Disadvantages
Performs only once for one push of bell
It can be destroyed when there is sudden
current loss.
In rainy season we can also get shock
from it if there is no earthing.
Requires batteries which may die some
time unexpectedly
