Role of Mass Media in Education

The technological innovation in mass media of educational communication

means that education can now be transmitted to far off places. That too
without geographical hindrances. A person sitting in India, for instance, can
benefit from a lecture being delivered in the United States. This saves a lot of
time, effort, and money. With ever-growing innovations in technology,
education can now be transmitted in real time over the computer screen from
far off places. The major roles mass media plays in the education field are:

 Universal reach
Mass media has made the world smaller; it has connected people like never
before. Education is something which must be universal. Mass media has
helped tremendously bridge that gap. In other words, it is now within
everyone’s reach and making the world a better place.

 Storage of information
Mass media allows storing information which can be accessed from anywhere
at any time. It is available at our fingertips literally, which saves a lot of time
and energy. Therefore, it serves as a rather useful resource in the field of
education.

 No Physical Constraints
One of the major drawbacks before mass media was a physical constraint but
not anymore. Mass media has reduced the distance and made the world
smaller for good. For instance, it is not necessary to be present at the place
physically to gain knowledge now.

 Organized Influence
Previously, the medium of information was rather unorganized. Now, the
mass media of information offers much more organization and sophistication
in delivering information. In addition, the authenticity of the information
being imparted can be readily checked and reviewed. It is possible with the
availability of mass media. This results in the reduction and elimination of
false information or rumors.

 Fruitful Results
Another huge advantage of current technological innovation in mass media is
the increased memorization capability of students. Many scientific pieces of
research have proven that transmitting lectures via an audio-visual format is
quite effective. It has a far more positive impact on memorization capacity of
the brain than merely an audio lecture.  Above all, this is only possible because
of the mass media.

 Provides every student with the possibility of learning online. Why spend

money on travel and renting an office if you can study from the comfort of your
home? These days, the wish to study and access to the Internet is sufficient for
getting a top-notch quality education. Distance learning is an effective method for
getting a decree from any educational establishment, regardless of its location .
 Makes it easy to get instant access to reliable information. Instead of going
to the library, it is possible to save time and find the necessary information using
Google. Moreover, Internet resources are very helpful when the information isn’t
available in the library. It is possible to find sample papers online as well as
useful guidelines on how to do complete assignments the right way .
 Serves as an effective device for academic performance. Social media
platforms can be successfully used for the teamwork . For example, if you are
assigned to conduct research on a certain topic together with a group, it is easier
to meet online and discuss the assignment together.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS
It has a potential for distraction

Have you ever been working on a capstone paper then without noticing, you have
your phone on hand and are perusing through social media? I won’t deny, but it
happens to me too. It can be a distraction when you could use your time on
important matters like studies, yet you are always online, responding to messages,
commenting on photos, etc.

The Evil
• It gives room to cyberbullying

In today’s world, bullying isn’t limited to physical or verbal attacks. Social media
platforms have opened another avenue for bullies to operate. Since there are no
restrictions on the type of words used online, several kids are bullied by other
students, on social media.

• It could be blamed for poor writing among students

1. The popularity of social media, and the speed at which information is
published, has created a lax attitude owards proper spelling and grammar.
The reduces a student’s ability to effectively write without relying on a
computer’s spell check feature.

2. Many students rely on the accessibility of information on social

media and the web to provide answers. That means a reduced focus
on learning and retaining information.

3. Our ability to retain information has decreased, and the willingness

to spend more time researching and looking up good information
has reduced, due the fact that we got used to the ease of
accessibility to information on social media.

4. Students, who attempt to multi-task, checking social media sites

while studying, show reduced academic performance. Their ability
to concentrate on the task at hand is significantly reduced by the
distractions that are brought about by YouTube, Facebook or
Twitter.

5. The more time students spend on social sites, the less time they
spend socializing in person. Because of the lack of body signals
and other nonverbal cues, like tone and inflection, social
networking sites are not an adequate replacement for face-to-face
communication. Students who spend a great deal of time on social
networking are less able to effectively communicate in person.

6. The degree to which private information is available online and the

anonymity the internet seems to provide has made students forget
the need to filter the information they post. Many colleges and
potential employers investigate an applicant’s social networking
profiles before granting acceptance or interviews. Most students
don’t constantly evaluate the content they’re publishing online,
which can bring about negative consequences months or years
down the road.

7. Students are having a harder time getting to communicate face to

face with people, and are losing their people skills, due to that they
are spending more and more time talking from behind a screen.
