I have a response and a request of my own if T may. The request for tenure to my committee regarding Nikole Hannah-Jones brings up a lot of questions and feedback. This is new to the board (and my committee) and needs more consideration than a few minutes in the time our committee is allotted, I would like to postpone-remove this from this meeting and let us fully understand this request and other examples of this happening. Tand others on the committee have serious concerns over granting tenure to a person that has not taught before. We take granting tenure very seriously We need to have discussions about this and do research before this comes forward. Can we remove this for now and take it up at BOT meeting in March? Maybe another accommodation makes more sense for the university and the taxpayer? Those are fair discussions and important FYI, the reasoning mentions appointment based on creative activity, reaching and service? What does that mean? Happy to discuss at your convenience Best, Chuck Sent from Chuck's EPA To: Blouin, Bob[Bob_Blouin@unc.edu]; Stevens, Richard|richardstevens@unc.edu}; Guskiewicz, Kevin M{gus@email.unc. edu}; Marshall, Chartes{charies marsnall@unc.edu]: David Boliex{aboliek @wncbriaw com; Aris, Teresa Caroliteeatis@unc. edu); Oavis, Rodney Eugene “r{gene davis@unc. edu}; jetforowng@mvalew.comiettorown@mvalaw com; Kelly Matthews Hopkins Haywood Cochrane[haywoodcochrane@yanoo.com], Cobey, Munroeigmcobey@unc.edu], mecullenre@aol.com[mecullenre@aol.com], John Preyer[jpreyer@restocationsystemes,com}: Reloh Meokins|rmeekins@teddyancmeckins.com] From: Duckett, Chuck{/O=EXCHANGELABS/OU=EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)ICN=RECIPIENTS/CN=D4291 SAEF80148C4G06B076CFODGECFO-MR CHARLES} Sent: Mon 6/28/2021 1:58:44 PM (UTC-04:00) Subject: Questions | need answered before any meeting on personnel matter regarding NHJ >>>>> Bob, If we are having a meeting before this board term ends, | have some specific questions | ‘would like to have answered in order to prepare. | think they would be good for this board or the next ‘when considering this process. This is a complicated process and needs more transparency than has ‘occurred to date. True transparency is vital. Please consider a couple of points | make on my own that have nothing to do with this actual tenure consideration, yet matter so that we may learn from this entire situation and be better as @ university >e>>> 1. Did Dean King recruit Nikole Hannan Jones on her own and discuss terms and parameters of ‘employment prior to discussing it with you? When did this process actually begin? >>>>> 2. Did Dean King discuss the hire with the Knight Foundation prior to solidification of her serious recruitment or her actual offer? >>>>> 3. Was the Knight Chair open or known that it was coming open when this hire/recruitment began? >>>>> 4. What involvement has the Knight Foundation had in this particular process? When did it start? ‘Who participated in the discussions? >>>>> 5. This position/chair has a different ttle than the previous chair. Who controls what the ttle and description are for the Knight Chairs? How have the tiles changed in the past? Who was responsible for the changes, the school or the donor? Done together? How does the process work? >>>5> 6. Was this job posted? Were other candidates considered? 35555 T. Is this donor involvement on the part of the Knight Foundation different than Mr. Hussman having feedback as a donor? Gitt agreements and donor intent matter as you know. They need to be transparent as well >>5>> 8. Are there olher Knight Chairs open or soon to be open at Carolina? Will the ttle and description for that change as well? Will such an opening be posted or specifically recruited? Will tenure be promised as this one appears to nave been? >>>>> 9. Are there other Such chairs or significant teaching positions currently open of coming open in the J School? If so, would there be strong possiblity of naring a libertarian or conservative voice to add intellectual diversity and support the Program for Civil Discourse that is fully funded with $10MM4? Is that e prion of this admin stration? 3555 10. From a personal siandpoint | ask if Carolina would support the Program for Givil Discourse by having Ms. NHJ and Mr. Hussman debate/discuss their views on journalism? This type of conversation and leadership is the reason the program for civil discourse exists. It is a great example of what this university should strive to do as often as possible. >>>>> 11. Should this hire be made and tenure granted right now considering that the candidate nas filed formal complaints that have egregious claims against the university and has also threatened legal actions multiple times prior to working here for one day? The candidate has not committed to dropping any of her complaints if she is hired and granted tenure, correct? If this correct, we are being asked to znd grant tenure to someone suing us before the matters are clarified or adjudicated? Has this ever happened before? No reasonable business would consider such a thing. >>>>> 12, Has anyone on this board ever told you that we could not hire NHU at Carolina? Was anyone ‘on this board directly involved in or part of the five year contract that NHJ agreed to and signed? | think the public will have a sincere interest in knowing how we have fourteen different tenure policies across our university. Yet, we ere ‘supposed to grant tenure to a person that has never taught a class before How do we explain that to the public? >>>55 14, As | have stated before, tenure needs national review and reform, led by serious, broad- minded people across the country. It cannot be done unilaterally or even by a single university system, That would be dangerous and would hurt this great university. However, there is a need for serious reform and this relatively young system of tenure (it has only been in place for eighty years, not the hundreds of years most people believe) needs tweaking, >>>>> 15, Nikole Hannah Jones did not create this situation. Neither did the trustees. Correct me if | am wrong, but our board during my eight years has never tumed down a tenure request once questions were answered. Those points matter. Shared governance matters and asking fair questions is important. Lam asking for this email to be made public as well, >>22> Thank you for your hard work and dedication to Carolina
