ORGS 1136 week 2, chapter 2 notes

Perception - The process by which individuals select, organize, and interpret their sensory impressions in
order to give meaning to their environment

Important because:

 behavior is based on perception of what reality is, not on reality itself.

 The world as it is perceived is the world that is behaviorally important.

Perceptual errors –

 Stereotype – Judging someone on the basis of your perception of the group to which that
person belongs
 Prejudice – A preformed opinion, usually an unfavorable one, based on insufficient knowledge,
irrational feelings, or inaccurate stereotypes
 Discrimination – Treating a person or group worse than others based on their belonging to a
particular stereotyped group

Is it legal for an organization to discriminate?

 Duty by law to accommodate the special needs of an employee or potential employee

 Exception is if the accommodation would cause undue hardship on the company
 For instance, a blind person applied to be an air traffic controller

o Cooperative vs. Disagreeable
 Conscientiousness

o Organized vs. disorganized
 Emotional stability
o Ability to withstand stress
o Calm vs. Nervous
 Openness to experience
