Overview:

The book, Epidemics, was written by Brian Ward. This book was published by Dorling Kindersly
Publishing, Inc. 95 Madison Avenue New York, NY 10016.

This book was nonfiction. It was filled with important dates, facts, and pictures that showed what
epidemics look like and what is used to treat them.

The book’s theme was educational and non professional at the same time. You know right off that it was
written for elementary to middle school children.

The general problem that this book addresses is epidemics and how they have affected our past. This
book tells of The Black Death, Typhoid, Malaria, and much more. It also tells how these dangerous
diseases were spread so that they became epidemics. The book also touches on how these epidemics,
and others like them, will affect our future.

The author’s purpose was to inform the reader of epidemics and how they affect the world we live in.
The intended audience is anyone who wishes to learn about epidemics, how they are originated, and
how they are spread.

Evaluation

Describe the book: The book is informative because it teaches people, who are interested, about
epidemics.

Respond to the author's opinions: Since this book is informative and completely factual there are no
opinions to agree or disagree with. However; I do believe that the author did a fantastic jobs in relaying
the facts in an informative and interesting manner.

Explore issues the book raises: The book raises issues about developing countries and how they are
dealing with their illnesses. In most developing countries there is no clean water and food is often
contaminated. This means that illnesses are common and with poor hygiene these illnesses are more
likely to become epidemics.

Relate your argument to other books or authors: Book was purely factual.

Relate the book to larger issues: The book affected me in a good way because I learned a lot about
epidemics from the medieval ages and how we can now successfully treat them. It also taught me that
so many countries are still having problems with illnesses that we can successfully treat. In my opinion
the United States needs to help these countries become healthier for everybody

Is this book useful? This book is very useful for somebody who is interested in learning about epidemics
and how they are affecting the world around us.

Summary

In Conclusion, I believe this book was very informative and useful. I believe that it was well written and
appropriate for school age children who might be reading this book looking for information. Some
advice I would have for potential readers is to read all of the text on the pages because that is where
you will find most of the information. I give this book five stars.
