Rhetorical Analysis of Field Artifacts

The business world is taking a sharp turn into relying on technology to run all systems

within the company. The computer systems run all client interactions through via zoom, skype,

or face time as well-run accounting and finance processes. Incorporations rely on management

information systems to run the computer systems that are used and need personal to manage the

team and systems that are running the company. Management information systems is a career

field that comes with responsibility, and the failure to lead and manage can drive a company into

the ground. The responsibilities this career field holds are the ability to hire good employees who

one can trust to thoroughly complete their job on a daily base with no issues. As a manager of the

information systems, one must be able to organize the computer systems used on a daily basis as

well strategize what will be complete year by year. Having responsibility of the computer

systems within a company can come with stress and failure, so one must always be on their toes.

This paper will analyze two different articles that focus on the issues one might have in a career

involving information systems management. The issues information systems management has in

today’s world of technology and management is the lack of strategizing and the failure to

organize, and the failure to hire employees who have learned and understand the systems being

used within a company.

Every job field in business America comes with issues and failures, which helps

companies grow, as well fail dramatically. Information systems management is a job field that
comes with responsibility and leadership and the failure to acquire both will lead a company

down the wrong path. Stephanie Farris illustrated an article in 2019 describing the common

problems seen in businesses with information systems management. She stated within her article

that the duties of MIS and the common problems seen are, “general term to encompass the

various technologies that exist in organizations today, as well as the personnel necessary to

manage it all. Common problems include failure to strategize, meeting organizational needs,

hiring and retaining good employees, staying current and integrating all your technologies.”

(Farris 2019) Farris included a deeper description of what each common issue does to affect a

company. The main issue in information systems is the lack of strategy. The leaders of

information systems have the responsibility to gather data on the given network on the tools

they have learned through education and experience. The issue is to put the information to use,

which often comes with challenges. Farris stated in her article about strategic failures, “At one

time, technology departments served as a separate operation, providing tech support and

keeping an organization’s server equipment running. Today, MIS leadership often sits

alongside other business leaders, working together to ensure that the technology being used

supports the overall mission of the company moving forward.” Farris (2019) She explained in

a detailed matter what management information systems has to offer and what is to come.

The second article used was a YouTube video by Anuradha Bhatia that discusses what

an information system is, but also the needs and challenges it has to offer. This 10-minute-long

video is viewed as a power point type of presentation with Bhatia’s voice in the background.

Throughout the presentation Bhatia places blocks or connecting dots to connect key points or

definitions so the viewer can take notes or have a better understanding at what is being

presented. In the first half of the video Bhatia goes into depth of what each part of information
systems management is. She broke the presentation into 3 different sections, one for

information, one for a system, and one for management. After an in-depth description of what

an information system is and the parts that go with it, Anuradha provides a list of opportunities

that learning information systems has to offer someone. She stated in her video that learning

information systems can increase worker productivity, improve team collaborations, and create

business partnerships ect. Away from the opportunities information systems has to offer,

Bhatia goes into depth on the challenges MIS has. She stated that common problems

information systems have, is a workforce downsizing due to internet take over, an overload in

information, security breaches within the company, and rapid changes and improvements in

technology. The presentation provided a lot of information through spoken words, but also

provided a detailed visual portion in a slide show presentation. The visual presentation is what

will keep the viewers interested in what they are listening too because it gives them the ability

to write notes and take information from what they see on the slide show. Bhatia placed only

important details and charts on the slide show so that the viewer is getting a full look at the

information provided.

Both articles in this essay are very detailed and provided important information on

information systems management as well as the issues MIS can come with. The written and

video article are similar in describing what management information systems is, but they both

have different information on what issues MIS has to offer. The written article by Stephanie

Faris only provides a definition of what MIS is and only a few issues within an MIS job. She

did provide a detailed description of each issue but could have gone into more depth. The

YouTube video created by Anuradha Bhatia was very different than the written article because

it was a 10 minute presentation that broke down each part of an information system. She also
provided visual representations on charts and graphs of what goes on in the MIS world. The

video article is more appealing to a person because they have the opportunity to listen and

receive visual representations of what the presentation has to offer. Reading an article can

seem boring to most, but a video or TedTalk is something that will attract a person in.

These two articles provided in this essay show that the world is moving into a

full technological state. Articles are now provided are able to be accessed through the internet

through videos, blogs, or podcast. This paper described the differences and similarities

between a typed article and a YouTube video. The YouTube video was the better article

because it provided visual representations but also an in depth description of what information

systems is and the common issues a job in MIS has to offer. Both articles stated that has in

today’s world of technology and management is the lack of strategizing and the failure to

organize, and the failure to hire employees who have learned and understand the systems being

used within a company.
