Governors Call to Overturn Roe V. Wade
12 GOP Governors Claim Roe V. Wade Impedes States Rights
Twelve Republican Governors from
Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida,
Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana,
Oklahoma, Texas, and South Carolina
signed a brief calling on the Supreme
Court to overturn Roe V. Wade because
they believe individual states should get to
make their own abortion laws.
Many of these states have already signed
laws to restrict access to abortions,
including Florida’s law that states that the
Affordable Care Act only covers abortion
in cases of life endangerment, rape, or
incest. People seeking an abortion in
Florida also must receive “state-directed
counseling” designed to discourage them
from going through with the procedure.
These Governors argue that allowing states
to make their own decisions is a good idea
because it’ll “let democracy work,” since
abortion is such a divisive issue. However,
in most of the states listed, most adults
believe abortion should be legal in all or
most cases, and at least in cases of rape or
incest.

Suni Lee’s All-Around Gold
Medal
And her impact on the Hmong American community
After star USA gymnast Simone Biles
stepped down from the group event and
all-around event at the Tokyo 2021
Olympics, 18-year-old Hmong American,
Suni Lee, stepped up to help her team
win the Olympic silver medal in the group
event. She performed her hardest uneven
bars routine, scoring a 15.4. Suni Lee has
always been a step behind Simone Biles,
but with Simone withdrawing, paired with
Suni Lee hitting top marks on all her
routines back-to-back, she won the all-
around Olympic gold medal.

that “By asking the court to overturn 50
years of precedent, they are asking for
permission to ban abortion in their states
and deny their citizens the freedom to
make their own personal health care
decisions.”
Twenty-one states already have laws in
place that would ban abortion should Roe
v. Wade be overturned, while fourteen
states and Washington D.C. have laws that
protect the right to abortion even without
federal law.
It seems clear that the push to overturn
Roe v. Wade is not just about “states’
rights.” GOP members want individual
states to make decisions so that they can
outlaw abortion. This would heavily
restrict people’s access to abortions and
potentially lead to an increase in unsafe
measures to terminate pregnancy.
Suni Lee’s metal wasn’t just a win for the
USA. It was a win for representation in
the Hmong American community who
have often been overlooked. They are
often seen as the “model minority,”
whereas in reality, many Hmong
American people are living on low
income and in poverty. However, with
this step forward in representation,
hopefully Hmong Americans can get the
resources and representation they need.

It is important to remember that examples
from around the world show that illegalizing
abortion does not make it less common; it
simply makes it more dangerous. It is
argued that it is not for lawmakers to decide
what medical decisions are best for their
constituents.
While the Supreme Court has not
commented on these requests yet, some are
worried about the Court’s future acts
because of the Republican majority.

Wearing Masks Inside
Experts estimate that about 70% of all
vaccine-eligible Americans need to receive
the Covid-19 vaccine to reach herd
immunity (the point in which our
communities will not be at severe risk of
contracting Covid-19 or dealing with severe
side effects). Although vaccination rates
were high earlier in the year, these rates
have dropped. As that happened, we
Coronavirus cases and hospitalizations
increased, especially among younger and
unvaccinated Americans.
Many Americans were ecstatic to hear that
our efforts to overcome these events were
working, but unfortunately, that excitement
did not last. Scientists revealed the Covid-
19 strand had mutated and developed into
a new variant known as Delta. Due to this
new strain, the CDC has done more
research and declared that vaccinated
people should begin to wear masks inside
buildings and when in crowds again. To
move past this era safely, we must continue
to do our part. Experts say the best way to
prevent the spread of Covid-19 any further
is to get fully vaccinated.
