This exam is composed of three exercises. It is inscribed on two pages numbered 2,
and 3.

Answer the three following exercises:

Exercise 1: [8 marks]
Magnesium has two valence electrons in its third and outermost energy level. Nitrogen belongs
to period 2 and group 5A.

1- Write the electron configuration of magnesium and that of nitrogen.

2- Specify the valence of each atom.
3- Deduce the group and the period to which magnesium belongs.
4- Use electron-dot symbols to show the bond that forms between Mg and N.
5- Specify the type of compound formed between Mg and N, and then write the chemical
formula of the compound.
6- Nitrogen can bond to other elements to form other types of compounds such as HCN.
Draw the electron- dot structure of HCN.
7- Specify the type of the compound, HCN.
8- Indicate the types of bonds formed in HCN and deduce the number of bonding and non-
bonding pairs.

Exercise 2: [8 marks]

The “Daniell” Cell

Document-1 represents a Daniell cell that was invented by the British chemist John Daniell in
1836 at the time where the development of the telegraph revealed an urgent need for safe current
sources of constant voltage. When this cell operates, the balanced equation of the reaction is
given by: Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) → Cu(s) + Zn2+(aq)

1- Referring to the given balanced net ionic equation, answer the following questions:
1.1- By using oxidation numbers, show that this reaction is an oxidation-reduction
reaction.
1.2- Write the equation of the half-reaction taking place at each electrode.
1.3- Deduce the cathode of this cell.

2- Referring to Document-1:
2.1- Write the cell representation of this
galvanic cell.

2.2- Indicate towards which electrode the

anions of the salt bridge flow. Justify.

3- The following axis in Document-2

shows the increasing order of the
tendency to lose electrons of
certain metals.
Choose among the following four cells, the one that produces the highest voltage. Justify
your choice.

i. Ag-Cu ii- Ag-Fe iii- Ag-Zn iv-Zn-Zn

Exercise 3: [4 marks]

An element T has six valence electrons in its second energy level and 8 neutral particles in its
nucleus. An element Y belongs to group 7A and period 3.

1- Determine the atomic numbers of T and Y.

2- Write the nuclide symbol of element T. Show your work.
3- Indicate the family to which element Y belongs to.
4- Determine the nuclear charge of element T.
5- Element J is directly under element T in the periodic table. Determine the atomic number of
J. Justify.
