ABSTRACT

Google has launched this new car project. This is a self driven car. It does not need any driver
to drive it. This is very ambitious project. The driverless driving of the car is achieved with
the help of many technologies. The sensors and camera are some of the important things
which make this possible. The car is still in testing stage. It is said to be out shortly and is
driving very well. This car has a LiDAR system which is the most important thing inside it.
Google has a separate software that powers this car. It is given the name of Google chauffer
.It also has a range finder mounted on it. This is 64 beam laser. With the help of this laser.
The vehicle can create 3D map of the surroundings and get a clear idea of the air around it.
This helps in clear and smooth driving without runninginto things .The laser is very effective
and accurate

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

The Google Driverless Car is like any car, but:

 It can steer itself while looking out for obstacles.
 It can stop and go itself based on any traffic condition.
 It is a combination of different technologies developed by Google.

The project is currently being led by:

Sebastian Thrun

 Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

 Co-inventor of Google Street View.
 Uses Google map, sensors, artificial intelligence.
 Lidar produced detailed map of the environment.
 Car uses white stripes on road to know lane.
 Pushing data into main computer to process information.

1
CHAPTER 2
COMPONENTS
 Google Maps
Provides the car with road information.

 Hardware Sensors
Provides the car with real time environment conditions.

 Artificial Intelligence
Provides the car with real time decisions.

GOOGLE MAP:

A Google map interacts with GPS and acts like a database.

 Speed Limits.
 Traffic Report.
 Directions.

CHAPTER 3
WORKING
HARDWARE SENSORS:

The hardware sensors gives real time environmental properties.

 Sensors attempt to create fully observable environment.

Hardware sensors:
 LIDAR
 VIDEO CAMERA
 POSITION ESTIMATOR
 DISTANCE SENSOR

3
LIDAR:

 LIDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging.

 LIDAR is an optical remote sensing technology, used to measure the distance
or other properties of a target.
 Scanning distance of 60 meters (~197 feet).

Figure: 2.3

VIDEO CAMERA:
 Detects upcoming traffic light.
 Recognizing moving obstacles on pedestrians and vehicles.

DISTANCE SENSOR:
 Allow the car to ‘see’ far enough to detect nearby or upcoming cars or
obstacles.
 It also contain radar.

POSITION ESTIMATOR(Wheel Encoder):

 Determines vehicle’s location and keeps track of its movements.
 It is maintained by the US government.
 It freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver.

4
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE:
Google Maps and the hardware sensors data are sent to the AI.

AI then determines:
 How fast to accelerate.
 When to slow down/stop.
 When to steer the wheel.

 Figure: 2.4 depicts the look from inside and figure: 2.5 depicts the look from outside.

CHAPTER 4
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

 Improved fuel efficiency.  So many taxi drivers can lose their

jobs.

 It will be of great help to people  It steals driving pleasure from

who are physically challenged. drivers who love it.

 Higher speed limit for autonomous  It requires that the road are in
cars. good condition and follows a strict
traffic system.

 Reduction of space required for

vehicle parking, fewer traffic
collision.
CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION

 Very useful.
 Avoid accidents on the road.
 Reduce the traffic time at traffic signal.
 Vehicles could be ready for market in as little as three to five years.
