the materials are in good condition. Yes, they materials are age appropriate.

♦ Is there DEAD SPACE? (ei. Areas where children can hide, areas where they are not

visible to teachers) 5 pts

♦ Yes, there are two dead spaces. One by the reading nook there is a child size fake

plant that I have noticed a child would hide behind frequently. The second is next

to the cubbies there is a little gap between the wall and the end of the cubbies a

♦ Does the classroom flow? (5 pts)

♦ Yes, the room has flow because the children have no problem moving from one

center to another.

♦ Rating: Using a scale from 1-5, how would you rate this environment? Defend your

answer. (5 pts)

♦ I would rate the environment a 4, because for the small room they do a good job

fitting many centers and each center has plenty of materials to do many open-

ended activities. From what I observed the kids travel to each area using the

center set up to create a character to be as they learn and play.

♦ Strengths: List 3 strengths you saw in this environment (10 pts)

♦ One strength I saw was the creativity in each center had like the names and

encourage the students to use their imagination. The second strength I saw was

the use of play in introducing the different activities to the kids. The third strength

I saw was one of the centers was call the Cultural Circle and it had lots of Native

American cultural artifacts like drums, rattles, and music. This school is Native

American based and in the Cultural Circle the kids were very familiar with the

items there and would go freely to sing and dance. It gave a little taste of home

and history to the classroom and it gave the kids a space for them to be proud of

their culture.

♦ Improvement: List 3 improvements you could see benefiting the children’s learning. (10

pts)

♦ One improvement I would suggest is to utilize the outside area with more centers

that the kids can explore. The second improvement I would add is a sensory

center to the help the kids explore touch and it give them the opportunity to create

a mess and play. I think this would help give the kids an experience to have fun

and be carefree. The third improvement I would add is for more assortments of

books. Like open-ended books that have more pictures and less words so that the

kids can create their own stories on what they see.

♦ List 3 DAP principles that will support your ideas for strengths or improvements. (5 pts)

♦ #1-All areas of development and learning are important.

#9-Children learn in a variety of ways.

#11-Development and learning advance when children are challenged.
