HOW TO PREPARE BUILDINGS

FOR THE POST-COVID-19 ERA

FITWEL Viral Response Module &

WELL Health-Safety Rating
A NEED FOR ACTION
As concerns about mental health emerge worldwide, and
intensify with the long-lasting Covid-19 crisis, the debate about
Health & Well-being at the workplace is rapidly evolving. We
currently spend 90% of our time within buildings, which makes
it essential for employers and property owners to act towards a
common goal: improve their employee's or occupant's indoor
environment. The current crisis has made one thing obvious: with
living spaces becoming simultaneously workplaces, buildings of
the future will need to be re-imagined. Returning to the office
will need to bring added value, well-being opportunities to
employees/occupants but above all, they will need to be risk-free.

FITWEL VIRAL RESPONSE

MODULE EXPLAINED

The Fitwel Viral Response Module certification has been created

by the Center for Active Design in response to the Covid-19
pandemic. It aims to develop strategies and guidelines within
buildings to limit viral transmissions, offering cost-effective
solutions based on strong scientific research. It thus helps to
increase the confidence of occupants and promote healthy and
resilient environments.

The Fitwel Viral Response Module certification is based on

three main pillars:

Encourage
Enhance Indoor
Behavioural
Environments
Change

Build Occupant
Trust

A building must meet at least 70% of all programme criteria to be

certified. It then obtains the title "Viral Response Certified". If the
building meets 90% or more of the evaluation criteria it is
awarded with the title "Viral Response Certified with Distinctions.
"All strategies in the Viral
90%+
Response Module are weighted
Viral Response
Certified with
based upon strength of
Distinctions evidence as well as health
impacts. Depending on their
70 to 89%+
Viral Response
final module score, entities may
Certified be eligible for Viral Response
Certification, or Viral Response
Certification with Distinction."

WELL HEALTH-SAFETY
RATING EXPLAINED

The WELL Health-Safety Rating certification was developed by

the International WELL Building Institute for mitigating the
spread of Covid-19 and for guiding building owners and
operators during the current crisis. By contributing to the
development of operational policies, maintenance protocols,
stakeholder engagement and contingency plans, its target is to
make buildings more resilient to crisis and prepare for the post-
Covid-19 era.

The certification contains 6 areas of action:

In order to obtain
certification, the building
must meet at least 15 of
Cleaning & the 21 criteria. It is then
Sanitization awarded the WELL Health
Procedures and Safety rated for the
reference year.
