back reamer cutting tool subject to Engineer approval. Cutting tool shall be
appropriately designed for the type of soil to be excavated. The Reaming tool shall be
capable of opening the pilot hole to a diameter slightly larger than the carrier pipeline.
The percentage oversize shall range from 120% to 150% of the carrier pipe diameter.
The Contractor shall detail the number of required reaming passes to the Engineer as
part of his method statement.
Drilling Mud – Drilling mud shall be used where required to stabilize the hole and
remove soil cuttings. Drilling mud shall be used in all locations where drilling hole is not
in rock. Drilling mud shall be bentonite clay (sodium montmorillonite). In rock
excavation another lubricating agent such as water shall be applied. Material shall be
submitted to Engineer for approval as part of method statement.
Pull-Back – The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer all calculations showing expected
pull-back forces on pipe as well as pipe resistance to pull-back based on selected pipe
class and SDR. The pull-back operation shall be carried out to pull the entire carrier
pipeline length in one segment back through the reamed-hole pathway. Proper pipe
handling, cradling, bending minimization, surface inspection, and fusion welding
procedures shall be applied. Axial tension force readings, constant insertion velocity,
mud flow circulation/exit rates, and footage length installed shall be recorded. The
maximum pullback speed shall not exceed 0.5 meters per minute.
Pipe Material - Pipes to be used for Horizontal Directional Drilling shall be DI pipe as
specified or any other material approved by the Engineer. The Contractor shall submit
full details of the pipes as part of the Tender submission, together with details of previous
works undertaken using similar pipes. The contractor shall submit design calculations for
the pipes including, but not limits to:
a) Pipe and borehole resistance to permanent service traffic loads
b) Pipe resistance to temporary loads encountered during installation including, but
not necessarily limited to pull-back tensile stress.
I. Tolerances - The finished pipeline vertical alignment (invert level) shall be within
+10 cm of the level shown on the drawings. The finished pipeline horizontal
alignment shall be within +10 cm of the alignment shown on the drawings. All
costs associated with the consequent changes in alignment shall be borne by the
Contractor.
J. Survey and Records - The Contractor shall record ground levels prior to
commencement of works. Reliable temporary benchmarks and reference stations
shall be established. The locations of these shall be agreed with the Engineer.
Four reference stations shall be set around each site. Levels shall be taken along
the line of the pipe centerline and at offsets of 5 meters and 10 meters each side of
the pipeline, at meter intervals between launching and
K. Reception Pits - Levels and position shall be tracked using both down-hole
surveyor equipment as well as magnetic field surface-tracking as a cross-check.
Levels shall be taken and recorded on all of the above points at regular intervals
during HDD works. The Contractor shall submit daily records of progress (i.e.
drilling and pull-back forces, torque, penetration rate, pull-rate, volume of
bentonite used, volume of ground water pumped, and any other information as
may be required by the Engineer. The Contractor shall provide As-Built drawings
in plan and profile based on the final course followed by the reamer and the
installed pipeline.
