How a capacitor works?

Metallic Plate
Understand the working by following steps-
• If we take a metallic plate and connect it with the positive Positive Charge
terminal of a battery, positive charge gets accumulate in
the plate.

• Similarly if we take another plate and connect it with

the negative terminal, the plate will become
negatively charged.

• Now suppose if we bring these charged plate Plate
closer. Opposite charges gets attracted (Fig a)
towards each other (Fig a).

Electrostatic Field
• Distributed charges on both the plates starts
trying to get closer which make scope for more
charge to get accumulated in the plates (Fig b).

• Results in flow of charging current and (Fig b)

electrostatic field gets setup between the plates
because of separation of charges (Fig b).

Charging Current

•As long as these plates remain close apart charge

remains on the plates because of the electric field
(Fig c). (Fig c)
• Even if we disconnect the battery, these plate have
potential difference therefore capable to make
charges to flow.

• If the plates comes contact by means of an electrical

conductor an electric current will flow form positively
charged plate to the negatively charged plate.

Discharging Current

• This flow of current continuous until plates become

charge free or achieve same potential.

Dissipate stored energy through an electric load when

it is connected across the charge capacitor.
