ENGAGE
Ask students to name some places they would like to go to. Then ask - how will they get there if they go?
Long distance places will normally elicit plane, so focus on local places and places only accessible by other
modes of transport in your Q&A. Ask students about tomorrow. How will they get to school at 9 o’clock? Is
there another way of getting there? Expand on the student’s answers by asking what time of day is best to
travel. This can serve as a revision of telling the time. If want to get there tomorrow, when will you go?
STUDY
Elicit the vocabulary not drawn out in the engage stage. Aim to cover plane; car; ferry; boat; speedboat;
motorbike; walk; bicycle; tram; train; coach; “tuk-tuk” taxi; limousine and chauffeur; helicopter and
underground. The verbs of transport such as walk; catch; take; ride; drive; travel on; and ‘be taken by’
should be covered. Use drawings on the board and mime where appropriate. Demonstrate an example for
each exercise before handing them to students.
Ask students to read the Extract quickly and answer the exercise A question.

Demonstrate each exercise. Monitor, observe and provide feedback. Feedback should be self-correction,
peer-correction followed by teacher correction.
ACTIVATE
“Travel Dominoes. Give pairs or groups of students a set of dominoes using the vocabulary covered in this
section. Modes of transport are linked to verbs. The students must put down a domino face up and then the
next student must try to place a corresponding domino next to it. The aim of the game is to have no
dominoes left.
