‘Will’ vs ‘going to’ and the weather

ENGAGE
Have a chat about the how the weather is today, and what the weather is usually like in their
county at that time and other times of the year. You could also talk about the weather in other
countries, and whether they think that they would like to go there.

Use the weather flashcards to elicit their meanings.

Draw a scale put ‘cold’ at the left hand side, with an arrow off from it, and try to elicit some
other words such as cool, warm, hot etc.

STUDY
Put two headings on the board: Noun Adjective and fill in some nouns.

snow
rain
fog
Elicit the adjectives.

Ask what the weather will be like tomorrow

Elicit “It will be sunny and dry” for example, whatever the response ask them if they are
certain !.
They cannot be certain because they are talking about the future, they are making a
prediction based on the evidence they have available (i.e. today’s weather)

Now ask them if they looked outside and it was black with clouds what would they say?
It will rain? No, we say ..it’s going to rain.
This is still a prediction because it hasn’t happened yet, but we are more certain because the
level of evidence we have at the time of speaking is greater than in the previous example.

ACTIVATE
On the board, elicit the symbols that are usually used for weather forecasts on TV. Mention
that wind speeds are measured on a scale from 1 to 14, where 14 is the strongest.

Each student (pair) gets a card with some information about a city, the country and a range of
weather symbols showing the weather over the last three days.

They have to write a weather report to present on TV.

Give them 5-7mins to get their scripts together and during this time sketch a rough outline
map of the world to show where their cities are.

Pairs come to the board and present their weather reports.
