Exercise

A Choose an adverb of frequency to complete these sentences, to


make them true for you and your partner.

Example: We ___sometimes___ play football at the weekend.

1. I ___________ brush my teeth at night

4. We ___________ watch TV in the evening.

Adverbs of frequency, time expressions

ENGAGE
By question and answer elicit the time expressions:

In the morning every day at night at the weekend

Create a table on the board and survey the students to complete it

Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun

Eat breakfast       
Wash my hair    
Drink beer  
Go to bed after midnight

Get the students to create sentences in the form;


Subject + adverb + action + time expression (from the table info)

Eg I always eat breakfast in the morning

I sometimes drink beer at the weekend

The adverb or time expression may be omitted depending on the focus of the lesson

STUDY
Draw out the scale line for the adverbs of frequency and elicit the positions of the adverbs

Never-----------------sometimes------------often----------------always

Some teachers may wish to use percentages to help illustrate this point

Activity 1. Verbal/boardwork

Elicit four action verbs from the students and ask them to create a full sentence using a
different subject, adverb and time expression in each case.

ACTIVATE
Survey Mill drill with question form Do you…………………..?

Part 1. Pre-teach vocabulary as needed, e.g. pyjamas.

Demonstrate the activity with a couple of strong students.

Students have one survey sheet each and should get as many responses as possible using
check marks in each box.

Part 2. Students create sentences using the information in their table.

Give an example: 8 students in our class usually have a shower in the morning.
