The Simple Present tense Negative form

Here, you have two options: the normal form or the abbreviation

am / are not ----- You are not a sailor Is not ----- He is not a doctor
Aren’t ---- You aren’t a nurse isn’t ----- Alex isn’t a architect
We use do not or am not / are not or aren’t We use is not or isn’t with:

You You aren´t He He isn´t
We We aren´t She She isn´t
You You aren´t It isn´t
They They aren´t

Notice: you have to use “I am not”, there isn’t abbreviation for this.

The structure of the negative form is created by adding the auxiliaries do or does plus the negation not

Here you have two options the normal form or the abbreviation

Do not ----- You do not play guitar Does not ----- She does not live in San
Joaquin
Don’t ----- I don’t work here Doesn’t ----- Alex doesn’t clean her room
We use do not or don’t with: We use does not or doesn’t with:
I, you (sing), we, you (plural) and they She, He and It

Task 2 B – Complete the chart below with don’t or doesn’t:

I DON´T
You DON´T He DOESN´T
We DON´T She DOESN´T
You DON´T It DOESN´T
They DON´T

These auxiliaries go with negative and interrogative form in Simple Present

Remember:

In positive sentences, we have two (2) forms for each verb (Except verbs such as: To be – To have),
depending on the person we are talking about.

Example:

3
DANIELA MAGALY MALAGÓN GARDUÑO 4 de agosto de 2021

Ronald watches TV. (Check and compare: here the verb has extra letters “es”)

We watch TV (Check: Here the verb doesn’t have an extra “es”)

Remember the rules for verbs in third person singular and complete them:

When the verb ends in

Ss, sh, ch, x, o = add “___________”. Example: They go – he goes

Consonant + Y= add an extra “_________”. Example: They play – he plays

Vowel + Y= Drop the Y an add “_________”. Example: They cry – he cries

Other examples:

play/plays , work/works, study/studies, watch/watches, etc…

But, to use a verb in negative or interrogative forms, we have to use the VERB without those rules:

Helen works from 7 o clock to 12 o’clock. - Helen doesn’t work from 7 o’clock to 12 o’clock.

CHECK: IN THE NEGATIVE FORM THE AUXILIARY CHANGES (do or does,) BUT NOT THE VERB.
