MYP 4.2.

1 Physics Criteria D – Investigating the Impact Power Stations

Name: _____________________ Date:_________________ Class #:_______

1. Background Information:

Number seven of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG) initiated by the UN states

“Affordable and Clean Energy - Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern

energy for all”

Today there are more than 7 billion people on our planet. It is projected that the population will
exceed 8 billion by the year 2023. As the population of our planet increases, so will our demand
for energy. This puts our planet under great stress as our ways of generating energy might have
a significant negative impact on the environment and the communities around it (increased
green house gases, acid rains, pollution, mass migration of people and animals, etc.).

STEP 1 – Assessing ATL Skills and Choosing a Power Plant

1. Use Table 1 to self-assess your mastery of the two approaches to learning (ATL) skills mentioned.

2. Choose a power plant that has been constructed or is under construction. Add your name and
power plant to the sheet

can choose the same power plant!

STEP 2 – Creating the Product

MYP 4.2.1 Physics Criteria D – Investigating the Impact Power Stations

Choosing a Product

For this assignment you may choose your type of product from the five options listed below:

1. Cartoon Strip/Storyboard: Drama not your thing? More of an artist or an author? Then this
product is for you! Create a cartoon strip or a storyboard. Illustrate your knowledge on paper or
digitally, the choice is yours. Set your story in space, in the distant past, or underwater.
Whatever setting suits your problem, solution, and factor the best is free for you to choose!

2. News report/Video Documentary: If you’re a fan of Planet Earth, An Inconvenient Truth, or

Before the Flood then you are in luck. This is your chance to get the truth about your problem
out there. Feel free to interview your classmates, your teachers, your parents, and random
people from Mega Bangna to get their perspectives and change their mind on an issue that is
important to you. Go out there and make a convincing news report or documentary about your
power plant and its contribution to the 7th SDG.

3. Infographic: An oldie but goodie. Use piktochart.com or other websites to create a beautiful
infographic that is understandable by the reader. However, be careful not to leave out important
text or discussion. Use visuals to clarify, not to simplify.

4. Structure or model: Are you up for a more hands – on challenge? Create a small model of your
power plant using whatever material you can find. Label the parts of the power plant and make
sure to include the relevant information and the discussion. This can be done in a separate word
document or you can attach it to your structure.

5. Write a Scientific Essay: Why are you even reading this option?!? Be a risk-taker and try
something new! However, if you insist, you may write a boring old scientific essay. Remember
that these essays have a very rigid structure. Your essay must use the format outlined by the
guide and you must use a formal scientific language.

Requirements

1. Your product will need to include the following things:

a. Basic facts about the power plant

i. Name and type of power plant
ii. Year it was built/is to be completed
iii. Location
iv. Annual generation/projected generation
b. An explanation of how the power plant generates electricity
i. The structure of the power plant and how it works
ii. The energy transformations that are taking place
c. An evaluation of your power plant’s contribution to achieving the 7th sustainable
development goal
i. The advantages and limitations of your power plant related to the SDG
ii. The advantages and limitations of your power plant considering a chosen factor
iii. Discussion about the cost, reliability, scale and environmental impact of your
power plant
MYP 4.2.1 Physics Criteria D – Investigating the Impact Power Stations

iv. Reach a conclusion, summarizing your power plants general contribution

to achieving the 7th SDG.

d. Work cited (CSE)

Regardless of the option that you choose, your text will be sent through TurnItIn. If you choose
Product #1 or #5 you will be asked to copy and paste the text from your cartoon
strip/storyboard/model into a Word document. You do not need to format this document and it does
not need to “look good”. It will be used only to ensure that you have not plagiarized any material from
other sources.

If you choose Product #2 you may use a speech-to-text app such as Voice Texting to convert the
dialogue in your dramatic performance or video documentary into text. Then just paste this text into a
Word document for submission.

STEP 3 – Submitting your Product

1. Your final draft is due on __________________________________________________________.

2. Please use the following checklist when submitting your assignment to ManageBac:

 The text version of my product is a WORD OR PDF file. Pages files are not acceptable!

 The title of my file is “MyNickname.docx” or “MyNickname.pdf”.

 My Cited References is not a separate file. It is included at the end of my scientific essay.

 I am aware that my report will be submitted to TurnItIn.com to be tested for plagiarism.
